Low budget means that they can barely afford ME!! :-) He is dual purpose, so he gets pretty excited! :-) The first thing Im going to try to "fund raise" is the temperature sensor control, and door popper combo. It gets so hot here, that in 10 minutes if the engine dies he's a goner, AND summer is just around the corner here, so I have got to get that first.

Jeff - Well, here we rip out the whole back seat and seat belts roof lining and then we re build the whole thing with light weight materials, fibre glass epoxy type material, with centre partitions that goes up half way, seat height and the rest is mesh or bars, in all my fourteen years no one has broken out, and the dogs have survived many serious crashes in this shell, for less that 1000$, email me for picks if you like.

Don't know about the others, but I've never been a big fan of transporting someone I've just arrested in the front seat. Each to thier own I reckon.

David,
I don't like to transport in the front seat BUT when you are from a small rural S.O. and many times only 1 car may be out ------- there is not a lot of choice.
Small agencies have limited ways.

There is no excuse for transporting anyone in the front seat of the patrol car... that's bad policy and can get you killed.

I have the same concerns about transporting in the front seat, especially if your single crew. (Spit in the back of your head is one thing, spit in your right eye is another!). If your department imposes these situations on you, try to convince them into getting a SUV or van. (Room for all!) or at least have the hinged partition in the back seat between prisoner and dog.
Unfortunately it is not until a tragic situation occurs that enforces departmental policies.

Mark,
I'm aware small agencies have unique problems. That is no excuse for placing yourself in needless danger. Troopers generally work alone, often, the only Trooper assigned to a county. A few years ago, you may recall reading about the incident, two officers picked up an elderly gentleman who had broken down on the side of the road. Just a simple "citizens assist" call. A few miles down the road, the elderly gentleman pulled a pistol from his pocket and fatally shot both officers. The moral of my story, before I even transport a person off the I road to a fuel station, they get searched before they ride with me, other than that, it's cuffed, stuffed and in the back. There is no such thing as a routine call.

David,
I understand many officers work on their own, however, with the back filled with dog & kennel and no other cars to transport - I agree all get searched prior to getting in the car - but it is in the front seat when no other cars maybe available.
Our local K-9 Trooper has the same problem - transportation up front ............. do we like it--- NO ---- Does it happen a lot ----- YES --- do we have much other choice ------ NO ---- do we use another vehicle when available ----- YES.
The idea of SUV's - Vans for extra room is a wonderful thought - not the van, but with tight budgets - it's not going to happen immediately. I drive a smaller SUV for a patrol vehicle and don't have enough room for the dog, equipment and the rest.
