I don't really know about this much; just had an acquaintance whose dog had the condition.
All I do know is females are more prone (but males are more prone for rage, which is clearly inheritied) but the genetic basis for AIHA is a bit fuzzier. I think a lot of these autoimmune things get tangled up with all the excess vaccination we do to dogs.......
I would just google the heck out of both conditions and spaniels in general. I think it is fair to say that people breeding dogs for show SEEM to inbreed more aggressively than people breeding working line dogs of many breeds and perhaps that is related.
Boykin Spaniels (SC state dog <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) are another breed of spaniel not influenced by the show crowd. My former boss had one and hunts with it. Nice dog.
I have a 7-years old English cocker spaniel. He used to be my narcotics detector dog. We gave him an early retirement for he didn't have the drive for the job. But he has enormous hunting drives. He's a variety they breed especially for hunting and not for shows. He's a bit bigger, his ears are smaller and his eyes are a bit deeper than with the show version. It's a strong, healthy
dog with a very soft and loving character. His only disadvantage can be the hunting drives. When he sees a bird he's gone. His kennel name is "of Dashhill". I don't know if you have this variety of the English cocker in the USA too.
Greetings Jan
