I just got a mail order large jute tug with nylon handles for puppies. It has been a great motivational reward for training - use it as much or more than treats!.
I was working the pup on not getting so worked up and jumping when I got home last night.
I let him keep the tug while I changed to take him out for a walk. Not more than 3 minutes. Big mistake. The handles are shredded and I just bought the thing like a week ago. Oh well.
I'm new at this sport-hobby but from listening to everyone on this web site I am convinced that satisfaction and pleasure you all derive from this "hobby" is priceless!
It's refreshing to see so many individuals passionate about something.
I am learning so much from everyone.
Thank you
John
don't forget to try your luck searching for training items on ebay. Just make sure of the quality of what you are buying. It is not a perfect answer, but it might help you get some equipment cheaper.
Good Luck

Oh yea. I made my own bite pillow/sleeve for my Mal pup for 10$ for Wally World. I have alot of equipment for my hunting dogs I can use for the Mal pup. Is nice if you can find like minded people to share equipment with espically the friggin bite suit <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> No way I even going to go thru expenses of a Schz club ??? Alot I can do on my own
And unfortunately, well all is said and done, *this* is an expensive sport no matter how you shake it.
With yearly club dues, travel, equipment, etc., I doubt that you can compete even at club level for less than $1000. a year, and I consider that a low-ball figure.
That's why my alarm bells go off when someone new to the sport complains about the price of a puppy - if they have problems with that figure, they're going to have problems with the money involved in working in this sport.
That's been my experience, and was what I had been told by others to expect.
But, you know, it isn't so much that the sport is expensive, but that raising a pup responsibly can be expensive, in both money and time. Apart from club fees and travel, most of my expenses are just part of having a dog and trying to raise it correctly. Most prospective owners just don't realize the commitment required. Like Will says, if they're complaining about the cost of the dog, then it's almost a sure thing there will be problems down the road. To drive the point home, I can use old cord for long lines, and get free burlaps sacks for tugs, but by far the best bargain I've had was to get a pup from Ed and Cindy.
