You can also get a liquid that is squirted between their shoulder blades monthly during heartworm season. It also kills fleas, ticks and ear mites. The one I have is "Revolution".
Does anybody on this board use 1% Ivermectin (the medicine in Heartgard)rather than buying the product Heartgard? I get 48 free doses of Heartgard a year b/c I work for a vet, but when I no longer work there and run out, I will use the medication itself not the product.
BTW. Heartgard (Ivermectin) also kills hooks, rounds and whips. But because the life cycle of these is three weeks and the Ivermectin/Heartgard is given every four, dogs that are under high exposure to parasites should also be wormed with pyrantel pamoate every other week in between the Heartgard/Ivermectin.

QUOTE from Anne: Does anybody on this board use 1% Ivermectin? END
No, but I've seen on the internet ads for ValuHeart, generic Heartgard, and the price was almost half off the price for Heartgard.
Also, general info about pet meds: I mentioned at the vet's office once that Heartgard and Advantage and all those things could be purchased online pretty cheaply, and they said they'd match internet prices. Told me to print out the internet ad from PetMedStore or whatever, and they'd meet it. So -- just bringing it up, because it doesn't hurt to ask! I had never even thought of asking; they offered.
My vet office is adamant that drugs should not be ordered online because the storage conditions are unknown and most drugs including Heartgard are temperature sensitive.
Ivergard is another lower cost Ivermectin heartworm treatment.
Because my dogs take liquid meds just fine, I don't see the point in purchasing 5 mcg in a beef treat to make it easier to medicate when I can get a bottle of 1% Ivermectin and dose myself. The only case in which I would absolutely use Heartgard is with a Collie or Collie mix because they are much much more sensitive to Ivermectin (reaction at 16x dose compared to 600x dose)
but hey, I'm getting Heartgard and Frontline for free now! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Why wouldn't a vet office be adament about that? cranking the price up is what they do. I seriously doubt that they have a different distribution system, that keeps the drugs cooler.
Will, when is your site gonna work? I am gettin a case of the impatients <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

My vet charges the same for the advantage and heartgard as 1-800-PET MEDS so I just go buy it from them. But I have purchased things from http://www.DRUGSTORE.com myself in the past - I think as long as its a larger company and not some Joe Shmo's Discount Pet Meds site it shouldn't be a problem.
