Will,
I agree with just about everything you said. Will said it best, these people are just anti-self-defense.
Aside from all the misinformation and blatant ignorance, there was one particular VERY LARGE red flag that gives you even more of a reason to think the editor or author of the article is a .....Oh crap, I can't say it here..lol
The big red flag is;
They say they welcome discussion and that they have talked to pro trainers and bla bla bla, but they post the response of the ONE ignoramus that went on about his pit bull leaping into someone’s face and ripping them apart. We all know, that's not the kind of people we are here, and that mentality is not what we think of when we discuss well trained protection dogs. The responder was an idiot for his comments too, but it really diminishes ANY credibility of the article because THAT'S the response they chose to print in response to the article. –One moron to another?-
These people are not worth quoting. As far as I know, you still can’t prove a negative, such as; How many crimes were NOT committed against me, my family, home or property because of my dog?
They go on and on bad talking protection dog’s saying that is all just a myth, THEIR ENTIRE ARTICLE IS A MYTH! No facts, just B.S.
Even the comment about the insurance company is false. They said if you mention you have a protection trained dog your insurance company may not cover you etc. The truth is; the training means nothing, if you own a dog on their “most vicious dog’s list” they may not cover you. It has nothing to do with the training; it only pertains to the breed. Yes, GSD’s are on that list. I believe there are 20 or so breeds on the list.
Ok, deep breath, counting backwards from ten,…
The only thing about this article that makes me feel better is, knowing that there are people out there (most of you) that do understand what “our” dog’s are all about.
They would never print a response from ANYONE on this discussion board, guaranteed!
I apologize if this link was already posted, I didn’t see it.

The best part in all of this is that more people will probably read that crap and believe it than anything we would write. I don't consider myself an expert, but I am much more qualified to speak on what dogs are capable of than any of those idiots. But why listen to someone who knows??? It is much better to create your own reality. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

They can say what they want, all I know is I am a single Mom of two teenage daughters, I have an alarm system...I haven't even turned it on.....Number 1: Anyone approaching my home is announced, anyone sneaking up to my house is silently monitored, and I am afraid anyone entering my house without being welcomed would simply be in trouble. I have two dogs, both Pit Bull breeds, both very protective of our family and make no bones about letting all know that.
They are sweet dogs, however I am confident they are a deterent, one that helps me sleep at night.

I haven't had any problems in my neighborhood since I got a GSD... when I walk by my neighbors house, their chocolate lab is always barking at the door - I know I wouldn't even try to break into that house if I were a thief - I KNOW that dog is a lil wuss, it'll run away from confrontation, BUT, i also KNOW ... IT HAS A LOUD BARK! Nothing "really bad" happens in my neighborhood, just stupid kids doing stupid things, any noise would scare the bejebus outta them, and therefore I don't need to worry about my cars not being in the garage or anything like that because my boy will sit at the window barking at em.
I caught the 13 year old down the street from me stealing something out of a contractors work truck in my neighbors driveway... (in fact, it was my dog that was barking at the kid while on a tether in the front yard while I was doing stuff in the garage)... Guess what he stole? You'll never guess.... the contractors next job was to install lil round cabinet lights in someones house... the kid stole a cabinet light... ONE CABINET LIGHT! Its worth $10 bucks at most with NO "STREET" VALUE! What was the point!? It's people like that who cower in fear when they see a GSD with hackles raised barking at the door, and it's people like that who cause the most problems in neighborhoods like mine.

Moreover, protection dogs are not nearly as much fun as affable, social dogs. They can't be taken everywhere. They have to be locked away when company is over. They usually don't become as companionable as do well-behaved dogs. There is always a chance the dog will turn on its owner or another family member at some point.
the potential danger of having a "trained" security dog. Many such dogs are time bombs. Eventually they are going to explode...
This guy (or girl?) has lost his mind. I actually feel guilty about reading that article in the first place simply because I'm providing his website with an extra hit.
Who the hell is he to say my dog isn't as much fun as his "affable, social dog". He seems to be making alot of unwarranted generalizations based on the incredibly small percentage of research or so-called "sources" he has regarding his information. He immediately discredits himself by generalizing all "protection dogs" into one category, which we all know couldn't be farther from the truth.
Nowhere on that site lists his credentials, experience, or anything about him. The about section is simply about the website itself. I'm curious if he has an ounce of animal experience at all or has simply pulled half this crap out of you know where.

I really hope some of these first-hand dissents are being sent to that site. Maybe they won't get posted........or maybe they will. But if they are reasonably and calmly presented, maybe they will at least give pause to the uninformed author of the piece. It'd be easy.......copy and paste paragraphs from what you have posted here.

It's ok... I've seen websites before against drug detection dogs because "drug detection dogs are trained by making them addicted to cocaine and heroin, it's cruelty to animals, blablabla"... there's no changing peoples minds about some things, best bet is to let it go and hope they stub their toe, cuz that really hurts. I did that 3 months ago and my foot still hurts... maybe I fractured it. But someone told me dr's take ur whole foot off if you go in for a fractured toe, so I'm not gonna go to the doc... maybe I'll set up a website about how dr's amputate feet when toes are fractured, making things up seemed to work for that guys website, because we're all talking about it! Ha! See I was going somewhere with this <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I too feel secure at home with my two GSDs. Nothing moves outside without my knowing about it. There is also the fringe benefit of their keeping the religious nuts off our enclosed front porch. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: I too feel secure at home with my two GSDs. End
Just the alert factor alone is worth it all, in my book! Even when my dogs died (old) in November and my first rescue after that happened to be a Pug in need, even having him alone for a while before another Shepherd came along meant that I was alerted every time someone opened my gate or lingered near it. I know that isn't what PPD is all about, but just that tiny factor alone makes dogs invaluable early-warning systems. And what miscreant wouldn't rather go somewhere where there was no barking dog?!
Now if the Pug had worn a GSD costume, I could've added the second factor: Fear of the dog.
