QUOTing Cindy: I feel very lucky to have FINALLY found one who respects my views on feeding and will actually read and further educate herself on this, even if she isn't 100% sure she agrees with it! END
Me too. I brought in a printed web essay or photocopy from a new book by a vet about raw feeding almost every time I was there, and she did start reading and she did stop lecturing me every time nutrition came up. I don't think she recommends it yet to other clients, but she doesn't jump back in horror anymore. It was worth the effort.
I told my vet positive experiences with a raw diet & did not seem to have his attention until I informed him my bitch that had heart problems for approx. 4.5 years had more energy than she has had in the past 2 years. With that said his eyes lit up & then I had his attn.
Just another story for the thread <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I know the whole raw topic gets a bit thrashed but I took my pup to the vet (5 months old) and after telling me what great condition he was in I dropped the Raw Bombshell on him and the guy started raving on about Phosphorus etc. The guy got quite upset when I told him that I dont feed my dog products that dont even list the calcium/ Phosphorus levels on the bag. Talk about flying blind! Now I feed mainly RMB's with about 20% muscle meat and organ meat + vege's. I supplement the muscle with 3/4 teaspoon of ground egg shell per pound of meat. Does this sound about right? Any body have any experience with egg shell as a calcium supplement?

I'm not clear, I guess: You were not feeding bones, but you were feeding raw meat? Because that would be an unbalanced calcium/phosphorous ratio, and the vet would be right to protest.
Or you ARE feeding bones but he still thought the calcium/phosphorous was still off? Meat without bones is unbalanced; meaty bones supply phosphorous and calcium in the natural ratio.
Yes, I have used eggshell.
I will PM you some details: proportions, etc., and some URLs.
I know alot of people feed chicken and apparently rabit RMBs but how about meaty deer bones. I have a german shepherd that I want to use for Schutz. Should I be worried about him cracking a tooth on these larger more substantial bones. Do these bones have the proper calcium phos. balance. Thanks
