My friend trains his chi's with popcorn. LOL..
it's imperative that any treat I use is NOT something I like to eat..LOL (or there won't be anything left for the dog!)
When I was teaching Xando eye contact I used steak that I spit at him when he looked at me...needless to say, I ate A LOT of steak every training session...and popcorn is one of my favorites!!

Where do you guys buy Charlee Bears? (is this something we should sell here at Leerburg)? Would they be good for a sensitive dog like my (and Natalie's) mals?
*always on the lookout for good stuff here!*

You can get Charlie Bears at Petsmart, I buy mine in bulk from one of the catalog places, I think it was JB Pet, but I've seen it in several catalogs.
It was the only treat that DIDN'T upset my puppies tummy. Liver or beef rolls gave him the runs, so I think it would be good for the sensitive tummies...

Phoebe is a doll !!! Way too cute !!! Three dog bakery has some small treats call Jump'n Sit Bits. They have not salt, sugar, animal fat, artificial flavors, colors or perservatives in them. They do, however, have some whole wheat flour, rolled oats & wheat bran. They are about the size of cherieos. I have used them with no illeffects. But then that was with a GSD puppy. They also have apples in them. Three dog bakery is out of Kansas City, MO. They have a web site http://www.threedogbakery.com. Happy birthday & good luck with the new pup. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

No wonder why 99% of dogs can't be motivated by praise alone. You start them so early with training treats.

Cindy,
Have you tried the frozen Bil-Jac food? It's soft and can easily be pulled into pieces as small as you need. I've found it to be easy on my dogs systems as well - one of them has trouble with rich foods. Also, most dogs seem to absolutely love it.

Flint River Ranch makes treat wafers called Trout and Sweet Potato Wafers. They're about 2 inches square, but are easily broken into smaller tidbits as they are relatively thin. My two minpins love them.
Here's the ingredient list:
Trout, Potato, Course Ground Millet, Herring Meal, Oatmeal, Sweet Potato, Canola Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Flax Seed, Oat Bran, Natural Flavors, Blueberries, Cranberries, Rosemary, Grape Seed Oil, Menhaden Fish Meal, Granola, Ground Oats, Alfalfa Meal, Brewer’s Dried Yeast, Dried Eggs, Lecithin, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate, Zinc Amino Acid Complex, Selenium Supplement, Mixed Natural Tocopherols (Antioxidant), Niacin, Iron, Amino Acid Complex, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Acetate, Ascorbic Acid, Iron Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Magnanese Amino Acid Complex, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganous Oxide, Copper Amino Acid Complex, Copper Sulfate, Riboflavin Supplement, Folic Acid Supplement, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide, D-Biotin Supplement, Vitamin D-3, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Product
FRR uses all human grade produce to make their food and treats. Or you could bake up a bunch of chicken livers until they dry out, and break them up into teensy pieces. Depends on how much time you have. She is a cutie pie!

What kind of comment it that?!!! Why wouldn't you use treats for a puppy? How many puppies have you trained? What experience do you bring to this discussion ON TREATS??
I am sure you go to work, do your best just for an 'atta boy' from the boss?

They are at Trader Joe's too. They are poultry liver and wheat with vitamin E. What I like is the 3 calories each --- they are really perfect for training when I like to have many many small (and preferably dry enough for a pocket) mini-treats. They are M & M size......a teeny bit bigger, maybe.
Of course, a dog who's sensitive or allergic to wheat wouldn't get these.
They are VERY cheap at TJ's. I think I am remembering correctly that a bag of about a zillion (a pound) is around $3.
