Now, would it be better to train as a PPD first and Schutzhund 2nd? I am inclined to agree about ASR but since it is not an option, how would this be best approached?

Here's what I've been told:
We'll start him out just like any other SchH dog, teaching him to bite full and confident on a visible, hard sleeve. Then, once he's doing that, transition him to a hidden sleeve, etc. It would be best to have a title or two on him just in case there are any 'accidents' or whatever, because those titles are starting to hold more weight over here in the States like they do in Europe. I wasn't told whether those titles would be sought after before or after the hidden sleeve stuff. Wayne believes that the Schutzhund training gives the dog a good foundation.

What do u do in this situation when u dont want the dog to get too sleeve crazy? Does that go with hidden sleeve work or would u choose not to slip the sleeve after a bite?

While I will admit I do believe if done correctly you can build upon that schutzhund training, But just want to clarify us reality folks, don't just throw on suits and yell get'em boy as we yell in our twankiest voice accidentally spitting copenhagen everywhere, LOL! We have solid foundations, like schutzhund. We start off with the drive focus grip method. I personally and people I choose to train with. Go from Rag work, and imprinting, to sleeve work, to suit work. Bite development and obedience should really be the same for just about any venue, with the obvious slightly various methods when it comes to various trainers, but my point is we also lay foundations, I have heard a few people here and there refer to wanting to do schutzhund to set a foundation, as if the reality program folks don't. How far are you from Boone, NC? I may know of a decoy who is very good, and a good trainer also who is out that way. There is bound to be someone out your way. I'll maintain a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for you.

LOL!! What a picture THAT is -- wait a second, that's how my neighbors behind me train their dogs. I surely didn't mean to imply that the 'reality based' people didn't lay any foundations or anything, because um, duh, you have to regardless of what you're training for. I was just relaying what Wayne told me, and since he's a Schutzhund man more than a personal protection trainer, that's probably the main reason he wants to start off the way he does. You know? Or it could just be because I'm brand new to this and he thinks that would be the easiest way for me to learn.
I'm in Asheville, so Boone is roughly 100 miles from me - 'bout 2 hours or so. I'd VERY much appreciate it if you would BOLO for me.

I was wondering what the Sch folks meant when they said they were gonna use sch for foundation, other than table training i cant imagine what other bite training method u would use. Id personally want my dog to go into a situation and spit the sleeve out and go for the arm, which is why i was asking about slipping the sleeve.

As long as a very prey trained dog has a good natural defensive drive you can get them out of being locked in prey on the sleeve. It can go from as easy as telling the dog the watch command and he drops it and fires back up on the decoy or to the other end of needing a knowlegeable decoy who knows how to use a whip. The understanding is to get the dog to leave prey and get into defense and understand just because the sleeve was slipped and he won the prey item, the threat is still there. Whereas before the threat was over when he won the prey item. However you need to communicate it to the dog that is what he must understand, that the threat is still there. I won't even go into a thorough explanation I have to be to work by 6AM.

Kristen: The female was out of Condor. Butan is out of a bunch of Slovak dogs. He actually has alot of the same dogs Kevin Sheldahl's dog CJ does ie Ajo Ja-Kra, Dora Podskalky, Cir Vrtovske, Blackie Lestie on the top. On the bottom he was lined on Alf Mniska who was a very good producer over there as well. He should definitely have the right stuff in his blood hopefully it will all come together. Ollie's coming along very nicely-good full calm grips with plenty of aggression in the bark. OB is just about done. Tracking...well I'm working on it. PM me and I will fax you Butan's paperwork.

Please tell me something, what was it he was doing before you took the first picture? Is Jack bohemian for satan?
Perhaps you have not heard about our ringsport revolution. Now it's all well and good to train for PPD, but a shotgun is a much more satisfying experience. Then if it happens again I reccomend a hatchet. O.K., have I mentioned Ringsports?
