Could I just add my 2 cents....
I have to say I'm not a big fan of the owner being prosecuted for any offence a dog may make. There is sometimes only so much owners can do, in that a dog does have a mind of it's own.
How would you feel if, god forbid, your child killed someone, accident or otherwise, and you had to spend the rest of your days in a cell?
Having said that there is a line and (not having read the story, from what you guys have said this family were negligent) negligence/deliberate violence i.e. setting a dog on someone, does deserve a severe punishment.

I agree with the parents being prosecuted. It is sad that people have breeds like this and have no idea how to properly keep them with or wihout children, other animals ect. I had pit bulls growing up and one when I had my daughter. ALWAYS supervised when together and Meakos was on lead with a prong collar. He never showed any aggressive tendency ever in 10 yrs. He was taught that he was part of the pack but not at the top of the pack and well socialized.
As my daughter got older she was taught to RESPECT any dog. Parents who do not teach their kids about the respect an animal deserves are just asking for trouble, IMO.
I love the breed, and would have one again but my husband now does not like them, PERIOD. And I respect that. Too much negative news on them.
These parents need to be punished for their negligence.
I also agree that dogs have their own minds and that there is potential for issues with ANY breed, some more than others.

Sorry, you own the dog you are responsible for it's containment, care AND MOST IMPORTANTLY it's actions. If you cannot be responsible for a pit bull type dog, knowing the damage this kind of dog can do, then by gosh you should NOT own them. It is because of irresponsible people such as these that innocents are hurt and killed, and I have to worry about a knock on my door to surrender my two Pits. Unacceptable, those folks are responsible and they should be held accountable...no ifs, ands or buts!!!!
I just have to pipe in hear. What about the Breeder- He/she has bred a dog with obviuos temperment flaw and worse yet places the $50.00 (just a guess) dog in the hands of some ignorant sob. This breeder will most likey keep breeding the same 2 dogs ('cause he doesn't have the brain God gave a goose). These flawed dogs will pop out some more unstable pups and the cycle continues... And I am not talking strictly Pits, but any mongrel scatter bred dog. The real Pit Bull breeder whom actually look at pedigrees and works his/her dogs must be completely mortified. Here's the big question---- How does society stop this?

Peace!
Until you can regulate breeders you make it prety d*mn uncomfortable for those who go the BYB route to screw up, this will dampen the demand from those folks because it will just be too riskey to get a questionable dog.
