...stuck the dog w/ a cattle prod as the owner watched, the owner lost his temper with the boy and ended up in jail...not sure if it is the same for an adult but be careful all the same..good luck to you. This is a heart breaking story.....
Damn skippy! When I was 12 I damn well knew not to stick dogs with a cattle prod, that kid got what he deserved. What is wrong with these people.
The dog comes home from the vet today, I couldn't agree with you more, if I were the mother of that child I would be thanking this man for recognizing a kid with some serious issues and hopefully teaching him a good lesson about the consequences of his actions....
I can almost understand a kid being stupid, but a grown man and a defensless animal, makes my stomach turn!

It's totally unbelievable how many scumb buckets their are out there, this past summer someone moved away, and left their dog tied to a post out front, supposedly the poor pooch had water at one time but it wasn't until about three days later in 90 degree weather that a neighbor noticed the dog and called the humane society, luckily the dog made it and is now in a good home, I think proper justice would be doing the same thing to these people as they have done to the dogs!!!!!
let's see how long they would last <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Well, we were out looking for him again all day today, with no luck. One person out of several farm houses we went to said they saw a black lab a couple of days ago but didn't latch onto him since he figured he belonged to a neighbor or something. We passed out several flyers and put ads in the papers, so hopefully someone sees something...If anyone on the forum lives in the area of Crofton, NE keep your eyes peeled...Also Yankton, SD which is only 14 mi. or so away!!>>

Good luck in your search Lori!
I am on the other end of a situation such as yours. This past saturday A gsd shows up at my house No tag, collar, tattoo, or chip. It is very frustrating to me because I would like to return this dog to his owner. He is a very nice and well trained dog. But don't know where to start to get him home. hope it works out for you. As for your mothers X. Isn't there some charge he can be brung up on, then sentenced to some community service----> I am sure there is some rescue someplace that could use a laborer to clean the excercise yard and kennels <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Rob-
There are a lot of places to start to help find the dog its home, if they are looking for it. Besides the newspaper, check with local city halls, vet clinics, humane societies, and some radio stations have a free lost and found. Check with local businesses, often when people lose a dog they ask around town. Don't know if you've tried any of those things yet, but its a start.

Yup, I've done it all. Went to several farmhouses, talked to the Sheriff's Dept, Hwy Patrol, local animal controls, humane societies, have put ads in the paper, posted flyers in gas stations, restaurants, etc...etc.. The area where he was dumped off is in the middle of nowhere & not very populated, so I'm just hoping he'll show up somewhere and if we havent talked to that person they will maybe mention it to someone who knows that we're looking fof him.

You might try putting something that your mother has worn out somewhere near where the dog was dumped. Or you might try setting a live trap somewhere in the same area baited with an article of your Mom's clothing, or food, or both. Have your Mom keep an eye out, too. This dog may be on the way back home. Ya never know!

Last spring, someone appeared at my door with a nice German Shepherd puppy on a rope lead. He had caught the pup roaming through garages over in the condos. He figured it was a local stray. It was a nice day, so instead of calling animal control, he decided to try and find his home. A few door knocks led to the 'guy who is always walking those nice, good-looking Shepherds'.
Nice pup. Friendly. Walked well on a leash. About six months old. Tired & hungry. Traveled nicely in the truck. Showed some ball drive. I was starting to think, "Well, maybe I could add another dog to the house if we can't find his home."
He did have rabies tags and a county dog tag. But no owner's tag. I was able to find an online database for dog licenses for that county. Some more on-line spelunking lead to a name and phone number.
Turns out the pup had gone missing about two weeks earlier. The owner had been desperately checking the local pounds and putting up flyers in the meantime. He had pretty much accepted the dog was gone forever. It was a pretty happy & tearful reunion.
The dog had traveled about twelve miles from his place to here. He had crossed at least two busy four-lane roads and a bunch of high-traffic city streets.
I later found one of the flyers. The photo was one of those blurry shots that showed nose and not much else. I could have never matched that dog to the photo on the flyer.
Morals:
Chip & tattoo the dog. It will aways carry that ID with them.
Add your name, address & phone to the tags. Someone will probably call.
The dog needs to learn early that the 'come' command is not negotiable.
Folks will often go an extra step to help a nice, friendly dog.
Have recent, good photos that can clearly identify the dog -- a nice head shot and a side shot are the essentials. Get down on the dog's level to take these shots.
Use a collar that isn't easily slipped.
Dogs can travel farther than you might expect.
There's a pretty fair chance that if dog in this thread isn't found, he will wander into a decent farm home. In the meantime, the ex-boyfriend needs to find out about the other side of the jail door.

Dogs can travel farther than you might expect.
My dog walks at least 4 miles a day without "breaking a sweat" at a fast pace - I've recently learnt all about how far a dog can walk hehe. However my dog also knows his way back home, so I often wonder why these dogs end up so far from home and so lost.
