What are the percentages of dogs that get these problems to begin with? I would be curious to see the numbers.
The only one I have saved (and properly indexed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> is the figure on mammary cancers. I have read the other reproductive cancer numbers, but will have to wait until tomorrow to find them. Mammary cancer is the most common tumor cancer in dogs, or was as of 2003.
QUOTE: Mammary cancer: Estrogen is one of the primary causes of canine mammary cancer, the most common malignant tumor in dogs. Animals that are spayed prior to one year of age very rarely develop this malignancy. Spaying a dog before her first heat is the best way to significantly reduce the chance your dog will develop mammary cancer.
The risk of malignant mammary tumors in dogs spayed prior to their first heat is 0.05%. It is 8% for dog spayed after one heat, and 26% in dogs spayed after their second heat. END QUOTE
These articles raise important questions, but no definitive answers. We can help researchers find the answers by sharing blood samples from our purebred dogs. During your next heartworm test, please have an extra vial drawn for research. Please see: http://www.broad.mit.edu/mammals/dog/donate.html for more information.
