Cripes, I hit the wrong button...wasn't finished.
Rashmi, have you thought about adding Vitamin C to your dog's diet? Ester-C in particular is well absorbed and has works great on canine bone/cartilage problems like 'growing pains.'
rashmi, what breed of dog is this? large breeds should not be exercised so hard at 9 months. his growth plates haven't closed yet and you can do harm pushing him so hard. what is the rush?
build up gradually, and if the dog is still exhibiting signs of pain, let him play at his own pace. dogs often push themselves too hard because they are trying to please and end up doing damage to their joints.
yes of course walking does build muscle. a gradual protocol might look something like: ten minutes of walking twice a day for the first week, then lengthen by five minutes every few days, twice a day, until up to an hour.
when the dog has gotten to an hour of walking from ten minutes, with zero sign of pain or limping, then you might want to start to seek out gradually steeper hill climbs to tone and build muscle and knee strength. ideal is a hill where you can get in a good steep climb going up, but come back down hill on a more gentle slope.
but remember that a nine month old large breed is too young to go jogging or on very strenuous walks. let him play at his own pace and take gentle walks. the muscle tone will come back on its own.
