I have to agree, most people do think bigger
is always better.
I work as a kennel tech at a public boarding
kennel and the owner also breeds German Shepherds.
When i take people back to the puppy pens,i always
know what the first question will be and it's
usually(HOW BIG WILL THEY GET? MY LAST ONE WAS 120
POUNDS.)I also have to bathe a lot of these fat
overweight boarding dogs and getting them up into
the tub can be a handfull.
I guess bigger can be better for somethings but
certainly not for GSD'S in my opinion. Good temperament, drive, and health should be your main
concerns. Don't worry about having the biggest dog
on the block.
it really is disgusting to go out and see the condition of dogs in general. I would estimate that 75% of dogs I see are noticeably overweight, with at least 25% morbidly obese.
I've had people ask me what's wrong with my dog that she's so thin (her ribs aren't quite visible), which would be insulting if it wasn't coming from someone with a dog that couldn't run a mile without keeling over.
I adopted a 6 year old that after 2 months I can finally feel his ribs and backbone under the fat, he's down from 70lbs to about 60.
I don't want to think about how fat Auster's going to be when I get home. I tell my mother not to overfeed her, but ever since Auster bloated she can't get enough to eat (she's getting moist food and she only got kibble before) and I know my mother's spoiling her (oh, she almost died! she needs some reserves in case she gets sick again. I'm just giving her what I was before, how was I supposed to cut back because she wasn't exercising?). Yes, I can hear all the excuses now. Sorry, just had to vent and if I tell my mother she'll just go give Auster even more because I'll "starve" her when I get home.
"Dog breeding must always be done by a dog lover, it can not be a profession." -Max v Stephanitz
Dogs are fat because people feed them shitty commercial dog food, and never exercise them.
Most Vets like doctors are general stupidier then the average person thinks, and never try to learn anything new that a sales rep or a drug company doesn't teach them. So if the sales rep tells the vet that the best thing to do for a dog is to eat their shitty food they try and push it on you.
Funny story. My grandparents toy poodle rat dog mix, that likes brandy is the essince of overweight dog. Its so fat that it breathes like its a cigeratte smoker. Im mean full-blown wheezing. I was walking this waste-of-a-dogs-life one day (up and down the block once), and this thing is so fat that I had to carry it the rest of the way home because it was wheezing so bad. During the walk to had to go #2, but because it was its so fat I thought it was dieing. Its about 10 inches tall and weights about 40 lbs. On top of this is its a fear-bitter, and hip problems
Because Grandpa likes the dog and no one else <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Its not that my Grandparents are senile, its just they really like to baby their dog.
