One of my dogs is very social, the others aren't, i don't really care. I tell people no if they ask to pet them. It's seems that most people never ask to pet the 2 anti-social dogs, they're in my control, but it's obvious by their demeanor that they're not approachable. As long as they act the way i want them to around people or animals, that's all i want. Bringing them to a school full of kids trying to pet them would be a bad idea for 2 of my dogs, but i'm ok with that, AL
most responsible school districts will want your dog to be certified as "safe" to be around the kids. you can easily get this certification (if your dog has the right temperament) by getting in contact with one of the therapy dog certification programs. i certified my dog through the Delta Society. after he had passed their tests with high marks, he was insured by them for $1 million of liability insurance and certified for work in hospitals, nursing homes, children's shelters, and schools. i paid annual dues, but i did not pay for the insurance.
it is smart for the schools to protect themselves by requiring this. but maybe not all are that smart. i would start by contacting some school principals and finding out if there is interest in such a program. explain that this education is essential to protect children from unknown dogs.
allergies have never come up as an issue in my experience. it isn't mentioned in the pet partners training i underwent for the hospitals, and the hospitals and nursing homes never mentioned it. i would imagine that if a school child is allergic to dogs, they will keep their distance.
