HELP! I am starting to think she is having some sort of allergic reaction going.. as the pain is spreading down her back and now there are weeping sores where she has not scratched at all.
I have taken some pictures if anyone of you want to have a look at them. What ever it is it is causing her a great deal of pain. I can’t even get near her neck or she goes all nut. The pictures I took are of her back which is sore to the touch but nothing to the existent of her neck. I suspect this will get worse just as the neck did.
Im going to switch my opinion to either brush burn or an allergic reaction to shampoo/shampoo not rinsed out well enough. See if you can get her into the tub just to rinse her. If you see any bubbles, you'll know its shampoo left on. Then you can use neosporin (sp?) to put on the spots to help heal them up.
I did call the Vet on Friday and he thought I should give it the weekend. He suggested giving her buffered aspirin for the pain and calling with an update on Monday.

I did look at both photos.
You took her on 11/23, right? This is what I would do. I would log everything: When she went; how long she was there; how soon after she exhibited signs of discomfort; what contact(s) you made with the groomer and exactly what the groomer said; the substance of your call to the vet; the date these photos were taken; just everything.
In the meantime I would be calling the vet and getting her in there right away.
All this might be overkill, but far better to err on the side of caution, IMO. Weeping sores along with painful swelling of the throat/neck say "infection" to me. I keep thinking of those (human) pedicure salons that got in so much trouble a few years ago when their patrons suffered staph skin infections on their legs as a result of one infected patron and improperly sanitized equipment and basins.
That may be way off base (probably is), but those sores, following that swelling and pain, would be a reason to call the vet no matter what the cause.
I personally would even call the emergency weekend backup and describe the sores (mentioning the swelling and pain that presented before the sores erupted), and ask what else to look for/at to determine whether or not it's OK to wait until Monday.
Just my opinion. The situation has deteriorated since you first called the vet; that advice is no longer valid because the symptoms are no longer the same.
Thank you, I always take your medical advice to heart and I am glad you posted. We will be taking a late night trip to the hospital. I will keep you posted.

Well, that's a very gracious thing to say. I spend a lot of time on research (especially nutrition and allergies) and on maintaining the information I collect, but that's all I am -- don't forget -- a regular dog person who researches canine health, and not a health professional! (I do *always* credit the sources when I am giving anything other than my own anecdotal opinion.)
Good luck. Please let us know what happens. And thanks again for the compliment.
Back from the emergancy and the DR seems to think she has a nasty reaction to the shampoo for lack of any other reasonable explanation. He had to sedate her just to get a look at her neck and then he clipped her hair off
It's not pretty. They gave her an injection of ketoprofen and an injection of Cefazolin, and sent us home with three prescriptions: rimadyl, Simplicef, and topical animax cream.
BTW... how long will it take for her hair to grow back. It's cold here in the NE? Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am at least comforted that it wasn't caused by rough handling by the groomer. We will let the groomer know what happened just so she is aware. I am assuming this is just one of those freak things. I will give future baths so serious thought before proceeding.
Here are some pictures of what it looks like with no hair.
Julia,
Looking at those pictures, I feel for you and your dog!
For future baths, I'd go with a home-made shampoo where you can control the ingredients 100%. Ed has a nice, benign shampoo formula posted on this site.
