You could get one of those 'flyball' boxes that shoot the primary reward out when the dog makes contact..that will get him going!
JUST KIDDING!

flyball boxes came to my mind also... but for different reason - so i was searching net for some automatic/remote reward delivery system (i think scratch boxes would benefit from that also) for rewarding on send away or large article search. Basically remote controlled spring mechanizm. There is actually a product you can buy that does just that, but i can't find link now... It is like tube foot or so long with diameter of tennis ball with i suppose spring inside and trigerr controled by radio remote. I guess you can do training on your own w/o someone to pull strings for you than?
Other than the boxes being more portable, are there any other advantages to the scratch boxes as opposed to scratch walls? Or just personal preference?
Dont forget to go down to your local paint store - see if you can buy somew new un-used paint cans- use a nail and pound some holes in the covers.
In the summer - bury these cans - some with just the tops even with the ground. Be sure to put a bunch out that have nothing in them. I cant remmeber how many times I did searches in rural farms looking for where the dope was burried. These cans (or even glass jars with holes in thelids) are excellent ways to train for it.
Ivan, I would be interested in seeing those sites, but all I get with your click ons is
"This page not available". Do you have any other way to access them?
My son and I were discussing some modifications he's going to do on his 55 Chevy and a bulb went on when we started discussing remote door button solinoids. With a little bit of good old Yankee enginering, they would have some great possibilities for remote releasing of a reward.
Ed... I like the paint can idea. I could probably get our roads department to make me some concreete "holders" so that we can slide the cans in and out in our training field.
Look for paint cans that could slide into a short sections of vertical, buried PVC pipe. Sections of that would be lots easier than having concrete holders made. We also use PVC pipe for cadaver scent work. A short section, with holes and end caps, work well for hiding. Cad material is caustic to metal cans.
