That grunt could be my 18 year old son who has received numerous calls from all recruiting forces to date... Or one of my 16 nephews of age 18-21.
My opinion would be the same. Some soldiers would leave the war and not give a rats ass about the dog they were partnered with. Others develop bonds like children and to separate them is like separating a mother from her child.

And reading some of these comments reminds me of the reasons that soldiers develop an often intense paranoia regarding civilians and the total lack of judgement regarding Military matters.
We know that they don't get it, and they will make decisions based on stupid reasons that get us killed. And when all is said and done...they don't care.
Joel, thanks for filling us in on the active duty standpoint, God Bless you and all the active duty soldiers for your service and sacrifice.

I've yet to meet a handler that's doesn't give a rat's ass about the dogs he worked. We all grow attached to our partners but we also realize our dogs are instruments to be used in the protection of others. Not a pet to placate our needs and wants. Peterson AFB now has an empty kennel because Rex has been signed out on a hand receipt by her until some decision is made on what happens to him. That means someone else is picking up the slack on where the MWD may have been going, Peterson AFB is now short on mission capability and will now have to "get in line" for their next MWD behind all the other installations that are short dogs, a healthy handler is now without a dog and losing his handling skills, and how many lives are not being protected by Rex on a DAILY basis? That's the BIG PICTURE, not the feel good story that warms the cockels of our hearts...
Will... I honor your service to our country. My father and 3 brothers served our country as well as my grandfather. There is a school named after my uncle for saving his entire troop.
If you can tell me you would give up fritz for the good of your country without emotional separation (all things being equal)... then you are a better man then most.

After seeing the number of good men that had died in the service for their country, yes, I'd give him up. I am alive by the sacrifice of others, and some are alive due to my sacrifices - both a burden and an honor to follow me in life.
But I know that no matter how much we love our dogs, you can not equate a canine's life with a human's.
But to possibily sacrifice a life due to the desire to have a companion that was bought and trained to serve soldiers.......I personally wouldn't be able to live with myself if I was that selfish and petty.
If there is one thing should reassure us all. Congress Acted! (Not so sure that reassuring) but they are our ‘elected officials’... they made the decision. It is done... so be it.
God Bless American and all our soldiers!!!!
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”
Exactly - Congress made a decision that will cost soldiers their *lives*.
And the civilians applaud those type of decisions.....great, just great. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
