how long after feeding does this bloat thing normally happen if food related? or
does it vary to a large degree.
im wondering cause i could keep an eye on him after meals but not for 8-10 hours.
also
is it now the norm to not exercise 2 hours BEFORE feeding also?
well then, that pretty much puts a damper on my daily routine of coming home from work, running the dog a bit then feeding.
i guess, lack of exercise is better than the possible alternative.
Here's a related website that I found. There's some information on bloat itself but also a first-aid guide. Kinda what you need to have on hand, how to tell if your dog does have bloat, and how to recognize how bad it is. There's some illustrations too. I found it interesting. First-aid to bloat
Hey, thanks for the link, that could be extremely useful, although hope to never have to insert a stomach tube in my dog.
my vets emergency location is around :30.
i will have to start gethering up some of the items listed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
The vet that gave the talk that I attended wasn't really huge on the bloat tubes. He said that basically, you need to get the dog into surgery right away, the tube isn't going to do anything if the dog already has torsion.
If you aren't comfortable with a stomach tube then don't attempt that part! You could easily send it down the wrong way. I might attempt it in the car on the way to the vet in an extreme situation, but it's nothing I would do if I could possible avoid it.

I think the main thing is that one could waste a lot of time trying to restrain the dog and force a tube down his or her throat, when they should be transporting.

I feed at around 9 every night. The dogs have been in and been settled with me for a while by then and I am not likely to go out and do anything after then anyway. In the morning I feed first thing after they go out to potty. They both know this and I often have to stand at the top of the stairs and MAKE the schnauzer go potty, she would rather eat. Then I have a few hours to do my housework and have my coffee and check out what is going on here before we go out and do anything strenuous.
