I've come accross black mal's, but I don't recall if they were crosses or not, but I'm pretty sure they were dutchie crosses.
I have seen some very dark mal's that were supposed to be 100% mal, they were just your typical mal but had like a black "wash" over 80% of their body, very cool looking - if I got a mal, I'd get one of those darker mal's... as for 100% black, I'm doubting they're purebred.

Mike, if a Malinois is black he has dogs other than Malinois in his peidgree. A Groen if he is dominant black, or a GSD if he is recessive black.
Officially, Malinois are not black and do not carry the black color genes. They've been crossed somehow, somewhere.
That's why it's funny to say a "full blooded black Mal."
There's no such thing.
Malinois pedigrees are questionable, so if you see black Mals, or black and tan Mals, or sable Mals, there's usually something else there.

Click the link below and take a look at some of the darker dogs in the pedigree, such as Arco Perle de Tourbiere, Lion Perle de Tourbiere, Benny-Furij Le Serviteur Puissant etc... this is me just clicking on a random breeding on Bloedlijnen.nl in hopes of finding a mal with the color I consider a "black wash".
Now, I'm not saying these dogs are pure mal's, but for at least 6 or 7 generations that the site is tracing back are all classified as Mal's, if they were crosses, they would have been listed as an X Mechelse Herder (note the preceding X), but these are all classified as purebred mechelse herders (reu = male, teef = female).
I'm not being argumentative when I say this - but does this mean that there's dogs maybe 10+ generations back that aren't listed on that site (aka "Unknown") that are a different breed?
This said, I would definately agree that an all-black mal is definately not 100% mal, but I'm curious about the dogs that are supposed to be purebred (and they are pretty good about admitting which dogs are crosses from what I've found) being of a darker color than your stereotypical malinois.

Good questions, and I don't know. The only people that can answer those questions are the ones who bred the dogs.

Well, when I let my trainer watch Ed's Basic DVD and I told her that Ed and this forum are mainly into GSD's and Mal's she looked puzzled, so I said 'Malinois' and she said 'Oh you mean 'Malamutes'' ha ha ha ha
Do you fancy some Alaskans guys? Not a lot of difference is there? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

NO...that's not what it means...they could be ANYTHING.
There's not even certainty that the dogs that appear within the first and second generation back are the ones that are down on paper.

Interesting... does this also occur with german shepherds? Or is the GSD breed just more organized? And if it does happen, what do people cross GSD's with to pass them off as purebred GSD's? Their coloring is pretty tell-tale of what they are so unless you pick the right dog to mix with it, the dog won't look like a GSD anymore, right?

I have seen some Gsd's with definate Mal like features on various websites. In America, I think we are a bit too hung up on paperwork, which is why, IMO that we still go overseas to get dogs. We are also hung up on titles, food, having too many/few litters.
I really doubt that "all" pedigrees on GSD are 100% accurate, but my suspicion comes from the many people I have talked to that SWEAR that there is no way that could happen! Hmph brbl brbl brbl. NO WAY! And then they get this look in their eyes as if you were taking away their religion.
Then they get really mad, and jump up and down, PROOF, brbl brbl, you have no proof. Then they really loose their minds when you could care less. Will the dog go down the field and engage??? Yes, keep it. No, toss it. So simple.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |
