Henry - my dog has what looks like a very similar problem. He constantly scratches and has marks on his skin like the ones shown in the pictures of your dog. I had many tests done and the final conclusion by the vet was that my dog is allergic to most types of grass. Very frustrating because we do *all* of our training on grass fields and don't really have another viable option right now.

Initially the treatment was prednisone which did help but as soon as I took him off of it the symptoms returned. Sadly I was told the only solution is to keep him completely off of any kind of grass.

There is also the fish-oil-vitamin-E regimen, which I believe can help with any kind of non-bacterial dermatitis, even if the cause isn't yet pinpointed.
By this I mean salmon oil (distilled, to leave out heavy metals) of pharmaceutical grade, plus mixed tocopherals (Vitamin E).
Each time I have adopted a dog who was turned in for health issues, which usually turned out to be severe allergies with secondary ear and skin infections, I started with these two anti-inflammation agents. I keep my dogs on them, always, even after I get their underlying allergies under control.
Thanks again Connie... as far as food allergies, would a food such as Innova Evo help? I have read great things about it and am sort of new to the dog world...
Thanks Connie, actually I do give my dogs fish oil, flax oil, and vitamin E every day. I guess the only thing left for me to do is to keep him completely off of grass for a few months and see if his skin clears up....unless I could buy him a dog suite that would prevent direct contact with grass.

This is a long shot, I realize, but I've had two dogs who were allergic to flax. With them, I upped the salmon oil (not liver oil) and left out the flax seed oil.
The dog suit might be too hot for training.
Otherwise, I have to agree with you that eliminating the suspected allergen(s) and observing the results is the most efficient trial.
