Actually, we're considering a new event for ASR, where a handler has to vacuum Fetz.
I'm hoping Chris Duhon will fall for it......... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

don't you think the embarassment of having Becky's old cat submit to a vacuuming would force Fetz to just "deal with it"???
AND, i think it'd be a hoot to see Chris vacuum Fetz; should you add gunshots and food just to see how good Chris REALLY is??/
just a thought.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I have vacuumed my dogs. I got the attachment from Foster and Smith and PetEdge. I gradually introduced the vacuum and attachment over a period of days. I groomed with the attachment without the vacuum on (no problems with vaccums anyway). I think it is helpful, but I still find the blade and deeper brushes to get at the undercoat are more effective.

I vacuumed my working dog every day before work while gassing up the car. After awhile he wont get out of the way so I can vacuum the rest of the car. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I found a use for my FloBee. I use it to both take of the shedding and I also groom my husky.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Maybe I'll open a grooming place... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Ok. This is weird that this comes up. Just a couple of weeks ago I vacuumed both my dogs (GSD pup and GSD/Lab 8-year-old). My wife thought I was nuts, but I thought that maybe I should get some use from our Kirby vacuum too. Anyhow, then I went outside to raked and horse brushed them both. The vacuum did remove some loose hair, but it left a lot of hair for the rake and horse brush to remove. In my opinion, the vacuum just isn't worth the time.

I just use a plain grooming rake......regularly.
I have heard a lot of people like the Furminator....not sure how it compares to a rake and if I actually WANT to strip out ALL the undercoat.........

I have a 10 month old GSD - long haired. I trained him to accept the vacuum from the day I brought him home (8 wks). Every day I ran the vacuum near him, around him, etc. but didn't allow him to "interact" with it. The sound of the vacuum became meaningless to him. I took him from that comfort zone to one where he was able to lie down right next to the running vacuum and accept his brushing routine this way. After maybe 2 weeks of this I then incorporated the hose of the vacuum into his grooming routine by holding his grooming brush in one hand and the hose in the other. As I would brush say his hind quarters with one hand I'd suck up the hair that came off onto the brush with the vacuum with the other hand, keeping the hose of the vacuum only inches from him. I did not put the vacuum hose to him, only to the brush. He now will accept me putting the vacuum directly on him but I find that that by itself is not enough. Brushing him while running the vacuum seems the most effective in getting loose hair off him and keeping them off my clothes and floor! BTW, I have central vacuum system so that might make it easier, all it is is a long hose, no huge scary Kirby sitting next to him.

This forum is making me laugh!!
I have so many visuals of these animals and owners and vacuums and it just freeking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> cracks me UP!!!
I vacuum MoJo, my GSD, sometimes. He behaves well and tolerates it. But after we are finished, as I vacuum remnants from the floor, like others, the machine transforms to "the bad guy". Pretty d'rn funny.
I do agree that a good brushing (outside <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> works better anyway. I really believe the vacuum thing is a mental thing for me, like, "Yes, I vacuumed the dog today, honey" like, "can I now have a bone?"
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em though. I actually saved my 1st dog's hair (BUSHELS) from every brushing for 6 years!!! She was wolf/shepherd. Don't know what came over me, but when she was about 7-8 years old, I thought I'd start SAVING it, as it does compact pretty well for easy storage, and makes a decent rope/twine/yarn if rolled together in the hands.
I still have 3 FULL, very compacted bags full of this fur in storage, and still looking for a "Rapunzel" to make it into the "yarn" I desire. Someday, may have a good rug, wallhanging, SOMETHING good out of that godforesaken wolfie. If anyone knows where/how to get this spooled, I'd appreciate it.
Loved the wolf/shepherd dearly, (will never do that again) but the GSD is beyond description as for having a dog, even one that SHEDS!!!
