I don't think this is a biased web board at all. I don't know if you read the working pitbull board, but someone over there caught the thread on the last pitbull attack that was posted here, and posted a thread called "ingorance" over there. They went on to say that not only is ignorance just among the general public, it's also in the working dog community, and linked the thread from here. I took part in that thread here and didn't see any ignorance or bias My statement that everyone believes the bad, but is skeptical about the good in pitbull news, wasn't meant to insinuate that this forum was composed of pitbull haters.
I've heard that there are a bunch of different lines of pitbull that are protective. Don't know how true it is, but I have no reason to doubt.
I have nothing against the dog or the breed, but my vote is with Will. My experience, too, tells me this is BS, for 3 reasons:
#1. It's in a newspaper.
#2. The man said, "As I went by, the lights went off," said the man. "I heard him pull out, stop, and back up. Then I heard footsteps running at me." He said he didn't turn around. . ."
What? At night? In Oakland? (For you non-Californians, here's the first line of an unrelated recent news article about crime in Oakland: "The crime wave in Oakland that has sent City Hall and the Police Department into crisis mode is mirrored by AC Transit, which has seen a dramatic increase in assaults and robberies on its lines since the start of the year."
#3. See reason #1.
As for "I just don't understand why people would waste their time making things like this up" that's something you'll just have to experience.
Barb,
"My statement that everyone believes the bad, but is skeptical about the good in pitbull news, wasn't meant to insinuate that this forum was composed of pitbull haters."
For the record, I like pit bulls and some of my best students have had them.
My problem is not with pit bulls and good news ( actually, I'd be glad if this was true ), my problem is that from a real life standpoint, that news event doesn't sound *true* - the criminal behavior doesn't sound true ( a mugger attacking a person walking pit bulls? ) and the dog behavior doesn't sound true ( dog not hearing the "mugger" running up and then magically biting the gun arm? ).
Even the victims behavior doesn't fit the actual episode well ( he was struck from behind with a pistol? Did he end up with a large scalp laceration like usually happens with that type of injury? No mention of that in the story, oddly enough )
With the multple red flags in that story, I just wouldn't be able to believe it without strong verification.
