The correct answer to your question is that its not that simple. You need to know about more than genetics behind the black dog in question - as you have a black dog you would have to know how many generations back have blacks. The more there are the more chance of him producing blacks.
Genetic's is easy to talk about and complicated to do anyting with. There was a Dr Grey from the University in Madison WI - a PHD in genetics - back in the late 80s he tried to breed GSD's - he tried to apply the theory and failed. Never did produce much.
Just proved to me that breeding is as much of an art as it is science.
I think Tom z Pohranicni Straze would be a good example of what you're asking aboun Jen. He's a sable with arm bars and tar heels, and from what I can tell has previously produced no blacks, and appearantly no dog in his pedigree is black that I can tell. Last year, he was bred to Dora Kvero, a solid black female. Now although approximately half the litter would be black if she was bred to a black sable, I'm very willing to bet that there were no black pups, as I'm fairly certain that Tom does not have a black recessive.
I just recalled the recent "B" litter Libertore was a Tom breeding with a black female. Now, some of these pups are very dark, but none are true blacks.
It really was just a curiosity thing...no big deal at all. I just see strange "myths" or "old wives' tales" and wondered if any breeders out there could concur. Like I said, they weren't very reliable sources.
Daryl, I know of several litters w/ one black parent that haven't produced blacks; I get that part. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Ed, do you have any videos on genetics and how they affect coat and color? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Daryl, do you mean Tom L's litter, or Tom z PS's litter? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Your brain is faster than mine at this time of morning... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
In Tom's pedigree, Bojka pod Zoborskou banou, Ajka z Vinodolu, Burga v Haus Himpel and Pushkaß v Haus Himpel were solid blacks just to mention few.

Shelby, I was being sarcastic! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I was making fun of their grossly exaggerated stance, if you can even call THAT a stance...poor dogs. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
