Brock, All spoken here is true. I had an Akita bitch for 5 years and the only thing left out of these posts so far is that they shed enough to create another Akita
When was the last time one has been used, much less bred (from previous bear hunters) for the task?
I've heard the party line parroted ad nauseum when I was looking to get one, yet I found no examples of them being used for "hunting", "police", or "military" work any-where, or any-when(say, within the last 100 years).
My girl blows her whole coat out one time in the summer -- When I notice the very 1st loose tuft, I use a Furminator rake on her & then go to the groomer ASAP where they vacuum out the entire undercoat in one visit -- Problem SOLVED and she doesn't shed at all any other time during the year <:-)
Thats true. Its in the summer when all H#@! breaks loose. Brushing out the undercoat takes about 10 pounds off the dog Its the worst Ive seen. There still is the usual shedding but when it gets warm the undercoat needs to be addressed all at once. They do have nice soft fur though. Very water repellant too.
Akitas don't get much demand for that line of work in most places anymore & since Brock lives (where, in a NYC apartment perhaps?) and wants a _housepet_ LOL, he probably doesn't run into too many Ursas in his neighborhood either...
But if YOU'RE still looking to hunt some bear & decide against an Akita for whatever reason, then you may want to try a Karelian:
Hi Howard (BTW, my bear post was for Steven) -- Many owners of nordic breeds (sled dogs, etc.) collect, clean, card & spin canine wool to make scarves and other garments, because it's soft as angora or cashmire <:-)
I have a Karelian for adoption. He's has good hunting instincts with squirrel, not sure about bear.
You must have some big squirrels up thee in Washington
Karelians are really a versatile hunting breed they've even been known to take over the role of a Lab and go duck hunting an retreving. Squirrels are some of the most favored game by them.
