There's a LOT more to the issue than just pain Do a search on "neuter" and the like on this forum and see just what's at stake. Young pups also have a very short attention span, so it could simply be that they get distracted from the surgical site quicker than an older pup (not a vet, just a "maybe"). Agreed, elizabethan collars and pain meds are there for a reason and they should be used as needed!
Just because it was learned in school doesn't make it 100% correct and right.
Sorry I should of posted it in my original post, but one of my pups testicles has not decended yet, and there is a good chance that it will not. This is why the vet has suggested that they remove the undecended testicle and neuter.
I think in both cases, either a vasectomy or tubal ligation reversal is definitely not trivial and would cost many thousands of dollars (at least in humans) and wouldn't even be guaranteed to work as I think the success rate of future conceptions is like 50-60% in humans. An alternative would be to collect semen or oocytes from the vasectomied dog or ligated bitch, store it, and then use IVF or a similiar technique. Either way, it is going to be very very expensive and it would take a vet who was quite the specialist to attempt it, so that would be a tough call and would have to be quite the exceptional dog.

Agreed. If they are monorchid or cryptorchid, they should be neutered as this is certainly not something to pass on and it is a pretty significant cancer risk later on.

Boy you sure have had a time with this pup. I just happen to look at your posts regarding this pup. To sum it up, the little guy wont eat, his ears arent going up and now his balls aint dropping!
Having a puppy can try anyones patience at times but this one sure has had his share of problems. May he grow up to be healthy and happy and have all his ailments left behind.
"Is vasectomy something that can be done w/o general anesthesia?"
Connie, back when I was a PA we did them in the office with just a local, but then our patients weren't actively trying to bite us...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
So knowing that one of his testicles are not dropping should I neuter now? Or still wait until he is 2-3 years old? At what age is he at risk for cancer?
I have a male that took 9 months for the second testicle to descend. While he is still currently intact, I spoke with a vet when he was a few months old, and they said that there would not be a huge risk if I still waited until 18 months or so to alter him. The only difference is that the surgery would be more complex to retrieve the missing testicle.
