A very big part of me wishes I had kicked the dog in the head or grabbed it or something. Nothing but a harness to grab onto (which would have surely resulted in me being bitten). By the time he was close enough to grab after darting around me and my wife he was off again. The dog circled around us.
I have twice had puppies run at my dog. They aren't as smart (or big) and went in straight so I caught them before they made it to my dog. (locked their little heads between my ankles).
I don't know if anything would have stopped him. I am 5'10" and 200lbs. and this dog darted around my like I wasn't there didn't slow down or anything. Paid me no heed when I got between it and my dog and yelled at it (a HEY was all I had time for).
An unusual situation since it was precipitated by a careless 4 year old coming out to play with mom. I have no idea if their dog ever came back last night. Having a little girl standing there 'almost' in the way didn't help things out at all.
I agree. It happens. no blood no foul. I guess I am expressing frustration more than anything else. I really don't even think my dog knew or cared that anything out of the ordinary happened. For a pound mutt (Heeler mix) he seems remarkably stable. Doesn't bark, growl, bristle, anything around other dogs. This one got a little close and he responded in kind. He wasn't interested in chasing the other one either after our pack (me, wife and my dog) ran him off.
Beware of kicking at strange dogs! I found out the hard way that some of them are used to being kicked at and scurry away. I tried to punt one and I about killed my back when it avoided my kick and I almost fell down. Piece of s**t dog ran a few feet off and continued to bark at me.
Slick little thing.. All the more reason to carry a stick or spray, I guess! Was it a terrier? I ask because I can see one staying just out of reach, baying away!
