That fake hand thing bothers me on many levels. It's not a human; this might well be a dog who has been starving; it just doesn't seem like a realistic "test" to me. I've done shelter work, and we don't use that particular test.
Exactly! Since it's not a human (as if a dog can't tell the difference!), it's not a fair test. And yes, the dog may have been starving, some did look like it, and a "stick" going into his food bowl may very well illicit such a response (although my pup would probably eat the stick as well - he eats everything!). Just not a fair test. I do understand however, that testing for adoptability can be tough, and the fake hand was probably someone's brain child. It just bothers me that a dog will literally be put down if he fails this "test". OTOH, I understand - to a point- that no one at a shelter wants to stick his or her actual hand in the bowl. Personally, I would stick my hand in there, heavily gloved with a sleeve as well. Glad to hear the shelter where you worked didn't do that test.

The feeder hand (which adds goodies to the bowl) goes a loooong way toward making it a better test, IMO. I know a couple of assessors who use the feeder hand now as a precursor to flesh-and-blood hands touching the dog, handing the bowl, etc.
I understand that someone (I think the same feeder hand person) is working on a pickup hand, too (which can deliver and pick up a whole dish).

Yes, depending on the facility. Policy varies widely. Some shelters have the wherewithal to make far finer distinctions, and even to place certain foster dogs who have manageable issues with experienced handlers (adopters) in no-children homes.

This is a much better idea and invention; I hadn't heard of it. It's good to know that not all shelters do the fake hand test, and that some do find experienced people to take the dogs with issues, it had me concerned for a long time. Thanks for easing my mind.
