Keep in mind that a more "efficient" food, nutrition-wise, will cost you less in the long run. My 95lb GSD only eats about 2.5 cups of any of the aforementioned foods. Most comparable dogs I know eat twice this amount of a lesser food. This is important to consider when looking at cost. Price per pound is not going to be the best way to analyze the best food for the money.
Does anyone here use "Steve's Real Food"? I've used the frozen
Chicken (comes frozen or freeze-dried) and my dogs seem to love it and react well to it. I'm just curious if anyone else has tried it or what they think?
I have a super shedder too! She does wonderfully on Canidae - which is a great food for a low price - I paid $27 for 40 lbs last time on sale. I feed the "all life stages" formula to my 9 year old Cairn Terrier, my 4 yr old GSD, and my 6 month old GSD all with really excellent results. My 4 yr old GSD (the shedder) also has a history of food intolerances, allergies, episodes of weight loss, etc. She is doing great on the Canidae, along with raw and the Honest Kitchen. Much less hair loss and no other symptoms...also use a fish oil supplement and a vitamin/mineral/probiotics/digestive enzyme mix called Immune Blend from b-naturals.com
I just started using the their cat food with our 2 cats. They love it, and so far they're doing great on it. I hope that continues - I had to order a whole case as it wasn't a item the store usually stocked. I do like the ingredients.
If you were in Europe, I'd recommend Luposan, a German-made dry food, on which our Malinois x GSD has really thrived.
For the shedding, I'd recommend a Furminator (and a very large sack for all the hair you'll get out!!)
Good old U.S. Of A. In Mississippi (aka Katrina Land).
Wow! Lots of great info! One person mentioned feeding only 2 - 3 cups of food per day to a 95 lb GSD... I WISH! My two take 3 times that amount per day and they have BM's twice a day. I'll have to break it down into price per cup per feeding terms for my financial supervisor (wife! I already mentioned less smell (and less poots to her and I hope this will put her over the top on this. (BTW, both of these dogs are INSIDE dogs so this will improve conditions).
I wish I would have known about this site a long time ago... I would not have made the mistakes I made with my GSDs' diet. This site is like the "How To" manual for good responsible dog ownership.
