Judy, if you leave your dog in a position of being able to someday decide to chew your $12,000 foyer rug, you deserve to be at the least disappointed because you are stupid to put yourself & dog into that situation. That is an absolutely ridiculous statement. I hope that you have an understanding insurance company should this event take place.
Please don't think I was critiscising or calling you stupid, that was not my intention! Having re-read my post and read the following post I may have offended unintentionally
Just passing another unwanted opinion
I'd cry too if I had a chewed up $12,000 rug, but I wouldn't feel all that bad when alls said and done because at that price I'd have had to have stolen it anyways
Anne, if I was as worried about my rug as you seem to be, I'd crate him. Lighten up sister. It's just a rug. I don't burn too many calories worrying about something I wipe my feet on but hey, that's just me.
So are we saying that we should only crate our dogs if there is a chance they would chew up something we liked? And if we don't really particularly care, let them have at it?

John
Hi John, no worries . Besides, if I had any doubt someone felt my actions were open for insult, Anne let everyone know she was happy to lead the charge.
I am of the opinion that experience and history is a good guide. If my dog doesn't bark, would it make sense to have him wear a no-bark collar? If he doesn't pull while on walks, does it make sense to use a prong collar on him? If he doesn't bite, should he wear a muzzle just in case?
If my dog could speak, I'd guess he'd tell me that he likes his crate AND he likes his freedom. And he has earned his freedom with outstanding behavior.
So, as long as I'm not putting him in danger while he is alone in my house, I will continue giving him his freedom...unless, of course, he chews my rug !
Your analogy is good, and Gunnar has obviously earned his freedom. But, that doesn't work for all of us, and I think perhaps it is a case-by-case or dog-by-dog preference/necessity. However, I think we are getting a little off topic. The OP, as I read it, has already decided to use a crate and is trying to determine how much is too much. The amount of time spent in a crate is what I think we are trying to determine and perhaps semi-agree on.
Oh, that's what this thread was about ? Sorry OP, I was having an "all about me" morning !
