.....The RCMP in Canada set the standard as far as I am concerns. RCMP K9 handlers have to come back to Innesvale Alberta on a scheduled basis and pass a PT test. I used to know the exact test but cant remember specifics at the moment - other than to say it was a bitch.....
http://www.topendsports.com/testing/forces-police.htm
Cool site with examples of a few countries' tests.
I knew less than nothing about this off the top of my head, but I asked a PSD trainer who does.
QUOTE: The RCMP use a PARE test which is a 6 lap obstacle course which must be completed within 4 minutes 45 seconds. PARE = Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation. It was developed from a detailed task analysis performed on various city and rural police agencies and then data collected on a specific test group that matched the average profile of a "bad guy." It's called "the gym" most department have their own gyms,or have a"special" rate at local gym clubs. When I used to teach Spinning classes I had quiet a few K9 handlers taking the class and they used to make comments about how important it was to keep their endurance level so that they could keep up with their dogs out on the field.I'm not saying they should be marathon runners but at least be able to keep up with their dogs.As you could see on the tape the handler could not keep up at all.

OTOH, he wasn't having nearly as much fun as the dog obviously was. You know how a good fun game can rev up the old endurance.
Sorry. Every time I see that clip, I notice what a great time the dog is having.

My impression exactly! That's what made me laugh so much . The dog was playing like a pup, chasing, then running back to the handler to seemingly try and engage the handler in all the fun, probably got reprimanded and sent out again. I felt sorry for the dog more than the handler, either wrong temperament for the job or wrong training or both. He did seem more concerned about his handler falling down than getting the bad guy. His heart wasn't in engaging, romping was more his style He was definitely confused as to what was expected. I'd like to see the dog's training videos to compare his reactions in training versus this real life scenario.

But are we sure that this is a trained police dog we are watching?
Its behaviour suggests otherwise!

Maybe it was somebody's pet that got loose

You have a point, it could very well not even be a police dog. I like what Dennis said, might be someone's loose pet dog, and the cop was trying to get the dog out of the way LOL. (I like playing scenarios in my head .)

I also think that when a dog sees his handler acting not so serious himself(running casually) the dog probably thought that it was just a casual run.The dog seemed so confused and enjoying a chase about nothing.I bet the criminal thought it was his lucky day!

You know another scenario to consider, let's say the K9 would have apprehended the crimanal and the criminal would have gotten a knife out and stabbed the K9 , where would this K9's partner be? About 150 feet or so away, huffin & puffin.
We always think first hand about the handlers safety (of course) but the K9 is an "officer" too, where is his back up?

Man you folks are rough. I have to ask when the last time any one makling such comments chased a bad guy in full gear, Sam browne, and vest and patrol boots? Folks it sucks it ain't like running in gym shorts and running shoes, it always happens 15 minutes after you just ate lunch, and it always is chasing some guy that just smoked meth or a a bit of crack to boost him a few notches. Easy to be critical when you weren't the one with feet on the ground. I just felt sorry for the guy. Dog sucked and he sucked wind.
But, this is the reason I always say, better to hunt them than chase them, safer to search than pursue.
I've been in better shape in my life but I'm still pretty able for closer to 50 than 40. I have completed numerous tactical courses in the past few years that were physically demanding yet, the truth is a slightly overweight forty something guy in full gear doesn't stand a chance against a young crack head. So, I let 'em go. Organize a search and hunt them down. Safer anyway.
