Kristel, it's in the original post that it was his son.
Ah, I see it now. I read it wrong.

Human nature makes us self destructive. Some more then others
and we can not breed it out of us.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!! |

Kevin,
I'm printing your post and showing it to my family. Maybe it'll keep my kids from someday doing what your son did.

My (ex) husband tried the Halloween mask stupidity with my first Dobe. He was lucky that it was just the mask that got ripped off and that his face didn't come with it!

i have a particularly creepy halloween mask that my wife can't even stand to look at, and one time i burst in the bedroom with it on (yeah, i really wasn't thinking) and i thought i was gonna get taken apart! it never occurred to me that my own dog might be in there, mightn't realise it's me, and act adversely.
actually thinking about it now, i'd have expected her to run and hide under the bed, but she stood her ground at the evil monster invading momma's bedroom!
needless to say the mask came off within microseconds of me remembering the dog's presence!

Family or even significant others are funny.
I always hear, "oh, he so well behaved"
Then if i have to give him a correction in front of them I hear "oh, you're so mean, he's such a good dog you shouldn't do that"
I just ignore it now.
Now Tucker isn't in the same league as most of the dogs on here protection wise. He's a 70 lb mutt, but I love him anyway. But even so, he doesn't seem to like any type of rough play around me. I am not saying he goes into protection mode and is trying to protect me, I know that's more than likely not the case, but he definately gets worked up. But I've had people say..."What will he do if i hit you?"
"Lets try it and see!" And its always guys that want to see what he'll do.
I honestly don't know what he would do, more than likely nothing...but still, why would someone want to take that risk?
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Well, stupid is as stupid does <:-O And as others have been saying, whenever a dog's owner is NOT there to supervise both the animal AND any idiotic guests, it's best to crate/kennel the K9, but you already know that NOW...
Sorry your Holiday was wrecked <:-(
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |

Eva,
the son is fine, back at his base, a good lesson under his belt, and he'll have a scar to remind him. He has no ill feelings towards the dog.
My GSD / Luke is fine too, but we will have to crate Luke when the son comes to visit from here out because now Luke is doing the intimidation, "I have my eyes on you" thing to him. He has always been that way, he has a vindictive streak. Normally he is laid back and easy going, but some people he just comes to not tolerate well, they come around and you can see the cogs turning in Luke's head, he is thinking, watching for an opportunity, any reason whatsoever, any excuse to get at them. I can tell him to "plotz" and he will go and lay down, but his eyes will never leave the person, and if they meet his eyes he will growl and start fidgeting.
If everyone is thinking alike, then someone isn't thinking.

Kind of off-topic, but I very distinctly recall a somewhat similar incident.
I had taken my 4year old rescued GSD with me on a ski-trip. We were staying at a dog-friendly inn near the resort. As I put on my ski-gear I thought I'd see how Ben reacted to my ninja-lookiing ski mask. Turned around, popped it on, turned back and popped it off about as fast as a human can. He went from half asleep to hackles up in the blink of an eye, and as I revealed my identity I'll never forget the head tilt and quizzical squint I got.
I was almost one of "those people" darn near a darwin award winner!
