Jay, I think I like Texas. My sister said the other day that we should move there b/c it's one place that we may not stand out as being so, um, extreme.
You should come to Williamson county. We have the reputation of being the most conservative county in Texas. Too bad our DA can't prosecute that case. Those "parents" would get the max. (And in my opinion even that would not be enough.)

i have long maintained that a pretty good sized portion of both my home country (australia) and this country (the US) have no business procreating.
unfortunately, while a spaying/neutering program for citizens brings a smile to the faces of some people, a good lawyer would argue it's unconstitutional - and he'd be right. probably also bring up the nazi references too... so it'd never happen.
but boy if there ever was a case for sterilization of parents, this'd be one of them. >:|
p.s. i too am saddened by the fact this couldn't have been any other breed. i think unfortunately there's something about APBTs that just attracts the morons out there.

Yeah, it's too bad TX can't get ahold of those idiots. Or, I was just thinking it would be nice if the "man" had to serve time in Angola and word was put out among the other prisoners that he was a child abuser. End of "man," end of problem. Is there an Angola equivalent for women? If there is I'd be wishing she could be sent there.
And yes, APBTs and other close cousins are the victim of idiots that want to appear macho. And sadly, if they all get banned it won't solve anything because the idiots will just latch on to another breed.
I hope both babies, human and canine will have a chance at a better life from now on.

Oops! Tonight on the news they played the 911 call and the mother said the ferret did it. Law makers everywhere are scrambling around writing up new ferret specific legislation I can't believe the ferret was going to let the pup take the rap for it.

Thanks Michael! Doh! Let's just blame the pitbull instead of checking...

I know there are lots of perfectly sane and intelligent pit owners out there, but I still maintain that in too many cases, people get pits because it's the only dog they can find that isn't smarter than they are.

From what I heard the mother, and I use that term loosely in this case, is blaming the ferret but the so-called father is still blaming the puppy. This makes me even more suspicious about what the real cause might have been.

Elaine, sounds like they really may not know. Either is capable, and neither should've been unsupervised w/or w/out the baby. I wonder if we'll ever hear the whole truth on this one...
Becky, it's really too bad that idiots have caused the image of the Pit Bull to be what it is today, but I think a lot of it is geographical. If you've never seen anything but the Pit Bulls you run into in large, high-crime areas, then you might come off with this impression. You also might have this impression if you only see them on the news. I know where you're coming from; I have seen Pit Bulls in OK; not the best of the best, not by a long shot. I have seen more dead on the side of the road than alive on a leash, admittedly, and I think that speaks volumes for where the problem really lies.
Having had a few very well-bred APBTs, I can tell you honestly that their intelligence can be comparable to a GSD's...but I must emphasize well-bred. A poorly bred APBT is as useless as any other poorly bred dog, only a bit more dangerous. The people getting them for the screwy reasons they do, are not looking for a good example of an APBT; therefore, they end up with junk, breed it to junk, and voila! A breed to be legislated is born!
Didn't want to turn this into a Pit Bull thread, but stereotyping is right up there with the low level mentality that allows horrible events like this to occur. (Not directing this at you, Becky.)

Thank you Jenni for addressing my thoughts exactly regarding the intelligence of a well bred APBT, Am Staff vs those poorly bred as well as ANY OTHER BREED of dog.

Great, ferrets don't need negative publicity either. I've a hard time believing a ferret could do that. Valerie, I read a similar article last night but in the one I read, the husband stated that the ferret was caged and it was definitely the pit bull. Now it seems he's blaming the ferret as well. I wonder if they just want to blame it on anything but the pup, however I do hope medical examiners test the wounds against the ferret AND the puppy so we know which did it.
Either way, parents still suck.
Elaine, I just read your post. You know, I do agree with you. Perhaps it wasn't the animals at all...
