Amber, your story reminds me of when we thought our then 2 yr old son had gone missing -- not a feeling I care to ever live through or even remember the feeling again. Even though we had a fenced front yard, we thought he had opened the front door and somehow figured out the fence gate latch (even though the latch was closed when we looked). We lived in the forest which made it much more difficult to figure out where to start looking, which direction to head in first.
After several minutes of and searching, (and me freaking and crying - my husband remained calm, thank God), we found him in my 17 yr old son's waterbed, sleeping soundly crumpled in the corner where the mattress curved. I had looked in there but not seen him - he just looked like another pile of my son's clothes on the bed. Mind you, this is a child that was NEVER out of my sight for a minute, yet he managed in a few seconds to find a hideaway for sleeping while I washed the dishes and had my back turned.
Back to the OP's question - all my previous dogs have slept loose in the house wherever they wanted. Lear however, sleeps in his crate. I want to try tethering him to my bed, but don't think he would settle down and would probably chew his leash off. He chewed through his car harness strap within a matter of SECONDS while I was driving. Not a good scenario.

Sandy, I can't even think about what that must have felt like. I have nightmares about that kind of thing, really. Thank God you found him!!

Yeah, I'm lucky that Carbon doesn't chew his leash. I do put a chew toy next to the bed, in case he gets the urge, but so far he leaves both alone at bed time. He prefers to chew metal, anyway.
He's also great in the car, but then again it's sort of like being in a crate, since we have a divider. He'd probably chew if I left him alone in the front.

my dog has a bed in every room of the house, but since i usually spend my last awake hour of the day in my home office, he conks out in there on his bed, and i close the door and go to bed and leave him there.
sometimes he sleeps in our bedroom, but usually in the winter it is too cold in there for him (we have an electric blanket and down comforter), and we don't like being awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of his collar tags when he shakes his head.
i have never, in 50 years, let a dog sleep on my bed with me. the closest they ever get to that privilege is when we go backpacking together. then i'm thrilled to snuggle with them under a tarp to keep the cold away!

Incidentally, my pup sleeps with me, but I sure keep the bedroom door closed. Otherwise he would reek havoc throughout the house!

You guys are hysterical!!! This thread had me laughing so much the new dog came in to see what I was up to.......'trying to get my breathing back' My new husband has a platform bed that's up too high for anyone but us and the cats to get to, but he has a 'no animals in the bedroom' rule so I had to deal with that for quite a while......luckily he's well worth it so I suffered in silence. Then he went to working nights so I sleep on the futon in the tv room on work nights, covered in 3 cats......its delicious! The dogs sleep in their respective (or each others') beds or scattered around like throw rugs on the hardwood floors. The new guy still sleeps in his crate which is right near the futon so it's a pretty cozy grouping. Only time I get a dog on the futon with me is when we have thunderstorms...then my little sheltie mix hops up and buries her head under my legs!

Sandy, that's why they make tie-out cables, LOL -- I don't crate at night, for two reasons:
A) My Borzoi would need one about 48x48x60 that would take up too much space indoors -- He's too big to fit on my bed & has his own "memory foam" mat on the floor nearby.
B) I tether the Akita to my bed on a short vinyl-sheathed steel cable -- She's too "alpha" to sleep with & would patrol the whole house on guard duty all night long, if not restrained on her own bed.
But when I had smaller breeds, they slept in crates <:-)
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |
