Sticker shock right now!!! $1,000+ for a pet dog? Is that reasonable for a dog who will not be bred or compete for titles around the US? Am I talking to the right people/right place? If not, do I drop down to the German show dog section?
I can just see my husband's face when I tell him the news.

If youre looking for quality and a certain degree of "certainty" in the health of your pup, be prepared to drop some dough. You could always look into rescues, as there are, last I checked, about 7,305 german shepherd dogs on the PETFINDER in need of homes. The only reason I'm not going for a rescue is that my human child is my top priority and without a full history on a rescue, I don't want to pursue that option. Well, the other reason is that puppies are just so damn perfect and they need homes too!!!
What were you expecting? Yes, the money takes a bit to get used to, but within a few weeks/months you'll be thinking $1000 is a bargain! Well, maybe not, but at least it won't be shocking anymore!
There are breeders who will discount a pup that they don't see a lot of working potential in, but most litters are priced pretty close from pup to pup. Breeding is expensive, and breeding really good dogs is even more expensive (stud fees, airfare, health screening, etc.)
If you need help with your husband, I'd be happy to direct you to $2500 pups or $5000 showline pups. I try to be helpful .
Seeing as how the puppy miller's are getting over a grand for their yappy, 'Designer' mutts, $1000 for a well-bred dog with a known history and temperament is pretty cheap. Hip certification, titling and all else that goes into breeding nice dogs is not cheap.
Remember that working line dogs typically cost less than the show lines.
Of course, there are the show line dogs that can bite a sleeve, get labeled as 'Executive Protection' dogs and help someone with more money than sense part with about $15,000 of that wad.

Denise, This was discussed on another thread, but applicable here too. If you tell breeders you would not have a problem with a "coat", it will cost less - just remember they are not suitable for breeding.
$1,000 seems to be the floor. In my search for a pup, I couldn't find any rhyme or reason to the prices breeders ask, or the variability between breeders.
