I saw Episode 074 last night, too. I really enjoyed watching the K9 do his thing and the bloodhound track. But I was concerned about the two "old dogs" that were taught new tricks. Such nice malemutes! So I was worried about what happened to them after the show. Went to Myth-Buster's website and this is what's written:
QUOTE: "Bobo and Cece were at a rescue center that fosters dogs into various homes. They were at the shop a week, being trained, then returned to the rescue center where Bobo has since found a loving home. Cece is still waiting to find her own home and the rescue volunteers have said that it was actually very good to have them away at Mythbusters for a week to help Bobo get over seperation anxiety.
It is not psychologically damaging for an animal to spend a week in different surroundings. If it were no one would be able to board their dogs or send them off to training camp(which in essance is exactly what they did).
Kudos to the Mythbusters for not only helping train Bobo and Cece, which helped them in their quest to find new homes, but also in bringing more awareness of shelter dogs in general."ENDQUOTE
I must say I am very happy to hear this!
I hope the K9 gets some food avoidance training. I was really surprised to see him go for the steak. I LOVED when he figured out the "Can Man"!!

I have to also say that I was not overly impressed with the "bite" dog. I am much more inclined to like the "high hitters".....

The only thing I can say is that any dog that has done protection work with a bite suit will recognize a person a mile away with it on, I wonder what the outcome would have been with no gear on, of course no one would be up for that challenge but you know it's like a guy with a sleeve coming into your home, most dogs that have done bite work with a sleeve would bite just because the sleeve is there. So the real test to me would be with NO gear. And you are putting a dog to the test in a big field, where it is trained most of the time, hardly a true test.
I actually enjoyed the blood hound work more, that was awesome..

Angelique, that's why I enjoyed the "man in the can" portion so much. The dog was faced with something totally new. He never hesitated or backed away from the strange "thing". He could smell that there was a human invader in there somewhere and figured out a way to get to said human invader (who was not in a suit at that time). Dog had to called off immediately. Pretty cool, I thought. I also liked the bloodhound work. Especially when he found the subject and washed his face for him!

I was disappointed . I'm sure my expectations were not reasonably set. I expected much more from the 'guard' dog than I saw.
Given the dog's seemingly short attention span, I think it would have been reasonable to put those folks in with two dogs at one time. I think that would have made it a heck of a lot more interesting. Would both dogs go for the steak, would 1 go for the steak and the other say, "screw that, I'm going after the guy"! If this happened, would it draw the first dog away from the steak, uneaten? What if they brought a dog with them and walked it along the outside of the fence while one of the people went inside the fence? I'd love to know if there were two guard dogs inside if they would split up, one go for the guy and the other be distracted by the dog outside? Does pack mentality kick in here and they follow each other despite their training (one goes for the steak the other foolishly follows kind of thing)?
So many questions, so little time.

The dog they used was a social dog. A social dog needs to have a handler present to be told when not to be social. The dog is a protection dog not a guard dog as they were trying to label it. It takes alot of guts for someone that is in the protection training business to go on TV for something like that. If it were me, I would make sure I had the nastiest most antisocial unforgiving dog around, because when it comes to protecting a big fenced in section of grass like that dog was supposed to protect... you can sweet talk the dog too easily unless he has real hate for people. There are ways to train for it but clearly that dog had never been trained for what they were trying to do. Who knows, with the handler present instructing the dog with vocal commands it could have been very different.
