Necks are fine, but I would try to get backs if you can - I find that they are only marginally more expensive.
Do your necks have a lot of skin on them? If so, I would take it off perhaps every third one or so. Dogs do need some fat, but I don't think they need all of the fat/skin that is left on every chicken neck.
I also feed pork neck bones and pork riblets, turkey necks (skinless) and turkey wings. The turkey I get from WalMart at a very good price. I get the pork neck bones for about $.79/lb at the grocery store, and the riblets are about $1.29/lb.
I buy chicken backs and necks by the 40 lb. case (80 lbs. of backs to 40 lbs. of necks) and then weigh, bag and freeze individual meals. Actually I have 2 dogs so I put enough for a full meal for each dog in one bag.
Buying in bulk whenever you can can save you a lot of money.
i removed all the fat from those neck bones. i feed a couple pieces of bacon as well, for got to mention that, @ each feeding..
even being the chef @ nice restaurant here in town, i can't seem to find a vendor that sells to us, that has chicken backs....i dont get it..i will keep looking. i am using a new company out of birmingham that may have them....
so, with the pork riblets, the bones are pretty soft, i am sure he will be fine with the...
i am still learning, so thanks for bearing with me. i am not weary any more about the bone, but do admit that it was a shocker of a change for me, but i do believe that it is best....
I had trouble finding chicken neck bones in my local chain grocery stores when I started to switch. I went to a small butcher shop nearby. They are happy to order chicken necks and backs by the 40 pound case. I ordered some necks last Thursday and I'll get them today. I don't remember the price from my first cases, as my wife picked them up and paid for them. I recall I was surprised at how cheap they were. When I pay for them today, I'll post the amount. They were all fresh and packed in ice.
BTW, my vet is a big supporter of the RAW diet. However, he's not keen on chicken backs. He told me that he's had some case of the longer bones splintering into the gunline and jaw and causing problems. I chop the backs in half before I feed them to the dogs. They seem to do fine with them. However, I am going to use just necks for awhile and see how this works out. I have not used pork riblest yet but they sound good, too.
