the above was an estimate...i declined almost all teh garbage like the injcetions and fluids and the like, it seemed rediculous...especially since the xray machine was broken....
charlie had a somewhat formed stool yesterday about 11:30 am, another one around 4:30pm. they were not solid, like what i have been used to seeing with the raw poops, but they were not like the liquid diarrhea that i had bee seeing the previous mornings...
he got a 24+ break on anything solid...he at the rice and chicken yesterday morning....and then a standard meal yesterday evening for his dinner..
he still seems fine. acting as playful as ever...he had another good stool late yesterday evening (11pm ish)....it was not solid, like normal, but it stood up on its own....same thing this morning....he pooped a decent (semi-) formed amount...
still don't know what caused this....and am still keeping a close eye on him today since i am off on mondays...

Having the stool turn back towards firm is EXCELLENT!
I'm really glad, Louis.

That isn't a diagnosis, though.
Does the vet have a fecal sample for parasite-testing?

i just got off of the phone with the vet tech. i am headed out to get him. they said that he is fine, and they can't find a reason for the diarrhea...so NATURALLY, he said it is b/c of the raw food...
my question to him is why has he been fine for ~8+ weeks on it then??
i will be back soon and will ahve the full skinny....

"Because of raw food" is absolutely not a diagnosis.
To say that when they can't find a diagnosis is a very bad sign to me. That's a typical catchall statement.
I hope there were poop tests done.

ok...we're back...
to preface this all i would like to say that my current vet is a good one, allbeit he is closed minded...he has saved 3 of our animals from life threatening incidents...so for that i am still thankful...
BUT, i am thinking about changing...if i could EVER get this hollistic vet lady on the phone, i may have a new vet...but, she is only open on tue, wed, thr's by appt....and i have left her 2 messages...not looking good...i will continue to try her tho in hopes that she has a different outlook on raw foods diets...
the vey gave me metronidizole is give 1 tablet 2x daily...it is for intestinal infections...(their preferred medicine for that)...
fecal tests came back negative for worms or anything of any importance...no xrays done......
at this point i am kinda miffed....i just dont get it. i absolutely love my dog and want the best for him...which, in turn, is why i switched to raw.
so, my one question would be how common is salmonella in a dog? could he have possibly have gotten some tainted meat? or some that is not quite right? i know how to handle food, but maybe there is something i am missing...
i will feed him his raw again tonite in hopes it all clears up...
please let me know if there is anything else you guys/gals can think of...
laters..
Louis

There is a fecal culture for salmonella. Did the vet actually call the problem salmonella without performing the test?
Bacterial gastroenteritis isn't uncommon, but the instances of it that I have seen in my own dogs or dogs in our club, etc., have resulted from dumpster-diving and/or roadkill snacking. I have read of many cases of kibble salmonella, and I'm also sure that even though dogs have a system that's far different from a human's (short, much less opportunity for pathogens to colonize), it is possible for dogs to get a salmonella infection from raw eggs, old meat, etc.
I would keep him on the soothing diet for a couple of days. I would also add plain (no-sugar) goat yogurt (or cow if you can't get goat) to the meals to replenish intestinal flora.
Did the vet mention Giardia?
It does seem a little as if the vet might have settled on a food pathogen diagnosis and then not been very thorough in the testing. JMO.
Of course, he might be correct. It just seems kind of pat ...

no, vet said nothing of it. but i was wondering where he was going with the raw comment, and that it (raw food) was probably his problem....
i have the active cultures yogurt....i will give some tonite...
should i just do the white rice and chicken again??? ( for a day or so? hell, that would be fine for my dinner tonite too...lol...
