Well I just wanted to add, that like Jennifer, I am pretty surprised Oscar has gas on raw. Believe me, coming from a Boxer owner, I know a thing or 2 about dogs with gas. Brandi was a pretty stable gas producer on Canidae. When she was on Merrick, I was thinking about buying my wife and I gas masks. Now on raw, I, er... my wife doesn't have anyone to blame her flatulence on
I am very happy to have switched my dog to raw. Her main diet is chicken necks/backs, ground beef, salmon oil, vitamin E caps, fruit here and there & an egg 3 x week or so...Only times she gets a little gas is on hot dogs & cheese for training treats.
Great you figured it out! I never would have suspected the salmon oil. Good sluth work
Did you ever find that thing about not feeing RBM'S with veg in the Billinghurst book? Still wondering where I read that or if I just made it up in my head?

I think it was the QUANTITY of oil all at once, and on top of the beef, that did it - having split the dosage, he's all good.

Not yet, but I admit, I have been a little lazy about reading these days and haven't finished the Billinghurst book... I DID however read that suggestion from another source, so I'll think about what I can do. The fruit wouldn't be a problem - he'll eat berries like treats any time of the day, but the ground veggie mush is pretty messy and it always made more sense to just swirl it around with the meat bits (I'm not even sure he would slurp it all up if it didn't have meat juice all over it :grin ... what is the "veggie patty" you referenced earlier? do you make them yourself?
*Alex - that's pretty funny - I know Boxers have a pretty remarkable reputation , is the breed sensitive to something like grains in kibble? My only other dog was a Pomeranian, and he could probably pass gass all day without anyone noticing, on account of his size When Oscar started to really reek, I sure missed that tiny 7lb digestive system!

Some people will make their own veggie patties, I have in the past, but I don't feed too much veg anymore. Most would mix some ground meat with some ground veg/fruit. Also some would add eggs or organs to this meal. This would be alternated with a very bony meal to balance things out, such as chicken or turkey necks.
My silly memory seems to remember that it was the bone that takes a bit longer to digest so the veg/fruit could stay there too long if fed together (fermenting?). Veg would be better fed with the ground...
Anyways, I have never had problems with bones and veg/fruit in the same meal, and neither have most I know so I wouldn't wast too much time looking for or worrying about that one Seems you got it figured out.
Sounds good Jennifer - I don't feed loads of veggies, just a few Tbsps with dinner, and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems yet - I only have the patience for this much preparation anyway.
BTW, that new picture of your pup is the BEST!!! It doesn't even look real! Like a cute mini dog in a beautiful, pristine little diorama...
I feel very lucky here! I've had Bayley on her raw diet for a while now and I haven't noticed any gassy emissions from her. My first dog could sometimes clear a room, more so as she got older. I'm still doing a little tuning and experimenting and finally found a cheap source of chicken, my butcher saves up the bones left over from deboning chicken breasts, so I give her 2 of those with her ground chicken (with the bones) and she seems to enjoy it.
