I think is a good go between, from walking to biking.
My previous pup and I would go around the parking lot where I lived, she would trot and I would skate. She was only 6 months old, and I couldn't walk fast enough to keep her happy. I couldn't let her off-leash (lack of good recall, too many people, too many cars, et ceter) so this way I was able to exercise her at her desired pace without her trying to pull me down the street.
My current pup, if I did that with him, he would pull me down the street (prong or not). He is so big, so strong & so very fast. He can out-run my son, and no longer tries to hold back for him. :-) Just a couple of months ago, he could out-run him, but would wait for him. How the time flies, and how they change ... both of them!
The Current Pup, I let him have the LONG LINE when I can ... and he does the Puppy Zoom Thing ... he just zooms here and there ... almost figure 8 style.
I watched the dvd and it stated you dont want to jog your dog until he is at least a year old. It went on to state that running a dog to early could cause typical osteo gsd problems.
All things in moderation ... yes Skating requires a hard surface ... but variety IMHO.
And you know I have thought about a Lunge Line for my current pup. If you can do it with horses, why not dogs. For my pup, I don't think a whip would be required. Unlike our former horses, the puppy like to run in circles. :-)
And if you were on something soft with Sawdust, why not?
I'm not sure how you plan on using the whip, but you can tie a toy like a burlap rag to the end of it and work your pup in prey drive at the same time he's running in circles.
