I use K9-Advantix along with an occassional addition of garlic supplement to his food. Garlic helps naturally repel fleas and ticks- it does not have the same negative affect as onions do so don't panic. Garlic is a natural anti-parasitic and anti-septic supplement. If you use 1/2 of a garlic supplement pill you'll get the same benefits and not have any stinky breath.
I found Frontline didn't work very effectively and I would find an occassional dead tick or two. I've never seen a flea or tick on my dog's skin now and I see it repel mosquito's- especially when we're in the backyard grilling.
Thanks for posting that info Steve. I've never used ANYTHING on my dog. I brush her at least once a week and have never found ticks or fleas on her. The deer flies are brutal at training on Saturdays though and we practice at a cpl parks where she is in long downs, etc. After reading this, I'm thinking I need to start using something on her.
also, and i'm sure this is common sense, but my vet told me that regular daily brushing and keeping the fur and coat clean will also assist in repelling fleas/ticks. Stands to reason if the skin and coat are healthy and has it's natural protective oils, it will have some sort of defense mechanism built in.
i use a drop called dog spot, works for 6 week...is waterproof and hav no problems with it...
i also use a natural aloe based shampoo which iv only used once so far but it says its supposed to help with getting rid of any parasites be it fleas or ticks.
and i hav had no fleas at all...we went out to the park one day and there was lots of long grass and areas where ticks could b...and i found 2 fat huge ticks about a week l8r on my dogs..took the shampoo ddnt dilute it applied it to a rag and applied over the ticks...they fell off after a few seconds...
works wonders..and its all natural!
