Sorry Charles, I think destroying a dog for no good reason is "uncalled for". Calling this guy an ASSHOLE is a step up from what he truly is. Let's give credit where it is deserved - squarely upon the ASSHOLES shoulders.
Indeed. But what makes matters worse is that not only did said asshole do something completely reprehensible - he then PUBLISHED HIS STORY in a VERY well circulated parenting magazine and CLEARLY slanted it in favor of his sorry self. Thus educating, inspiring and validating countless others in the backwards ways of incompetant dog ownership - new parents (the primary market for that magazine) are probably THE MOST SUSSEPTIBLE to this kind of dangerous influence - they have nothing to lose, as long as it's 'for the safety of the baby'. Sure, you can blame one crap trainer or a med-happy vet for poor guidance, but if it were me, I would look for a HELL of a lot more opinions and options if it were MY dog before I EVER considered taking his life.
I as well DO think this guy is a moron and I feel truly sorry for his youngest child, who knew enough to question dad as he sent mom off to "do away" with the family pet - what kind of lesson is THAT??

What a pathetic person. And he claims he insisted the dog had to go, but didn't even have the huevos to take the dog in either time himself.
I read back through the thread to see if anyone pointed this out. It really jumped out at me. He made alot of choices, did this and did that. But honey, take the dog to the vet to be put to sleep.
What Mike A. said really stood out to me too.
I do believe I am the one who started the A-HOLE comment. I don't like to just toss words out, but I firmly believe this writer deserves it. If he has the education to be a writer/editor/publisher and have access to the internet, at one point in time a light bulb should've popped in his head and a quick internet search could have saved him a lot of trouble and Wilson, his life. Even if it was too late for that, he could at least help others avoid his mistake. What happens to the next un-perfect dog he gets?

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but as usual my search on this site has gone awry and I found it while searching for "fence aggression". But I read the article and I just had to respond. I am on the fence here.. this man's decision was certainly not one I would have taken, but it does highlight how truly little people actually know about dogs (which doesn't give me much hope for the 5-week-old pups I have who will need good homes) AND how few resources there are to help people. Did you ever look at Ed's Q and A pages? They are chock-full of people who have VERY SIMILAR problems and have NO idea what to do or who to turn to. So in a way I can kind of see how this guy ended up where he did.
Did anyone other than me, however, notice the title of the article in the title bar? "WHAT TO DO when a pet acts out" as though it were a how-to. THAT is what got MY goat.

At the time, I googled his name and found his web site. After a few days, I was able to write a reasonable civil email. I basically stated he didn't provide a very intelligent, compassionate solution for dealing with what was his problem and suggested it would be nice to follow up his article with something that outlined some humane options for readers.
As expected, I got no reply.

I somehow missed this thread the first time around, so I'm glad you ressurected it. I agree the guy was an A$$hole, but was misguided. I was there once too....But I am learning. Maybe we need to try to educate all the yahoos out there that are going to buy there dogs from BYB and pet shops, or just get one from their neighbors. Maybe we should post some kid of fliers in every pet shop, humane society, community bulletin board, Walmart, etc. etc. such as this:
Hope this doesn't violate any board policy! It was just a thought I had. I sure wish I had heard about this web site years ago.

Mike, I'm very sorry to hear that guy didn't bother to reply to your email. I'm glad you tried to reason with him, though.
Shody, what an excellent idea. There is a dog trainer in town who uses a similar flyer (the title is: "Is your dog's behaviour driving you crazy?"). I have enrolled in many of her classes with various dogs and I really like her. I know Ed doesn't like ob classes but she uses many of the same techniques as Ed for dog training. I think she is excellent.
More communities need trainers like that who are willing to work with people who honestly don't understand the gradual escalation of dominance and how to get their pets under control. (Especially the non computer literate ones who will never find Leerburg on their own.).
