Carol, a CGC would be a good BASIC requirement for standards.
As with any certificate/title/etc they can all be trained for. Any standards still need a qualified person to judge the individual dogs temperment. As with ANY dog training, just being qualified to evaluate for the CGC has nothing to do with a persons ability to understand dogs.
Mike, don't sweat the stars. They have nothing to do with how smart or how good a dog trainer is on this or any form. In the 4-5 yrs I've been comming to Ed's forum I've run the whole spectrum with the stars. I've never felt any brain vaccum when I've lost stars or haven't felt any rush of knowledge when I've picked up a star. They're all about pissing off someone with a vengfull typing finger on a given day. LOL! LOL!

Too true, in all venues of dog training. I went and watched some evaluations here recently for handlers who were testing to SAR certs.
The Instructor/Evaluator had never worked a dog let alone certified a dog in either of the disciplines they were testing other people to.
Now, I am not an expert by any means, but I like to train and certify with trainers who have experience in the discipline I am testing and training to.
It is disappointing to me that stuff like this happens, it only adds to the Yahoos that are out responding to searches with dogs that cannot do the job.

It is unfortunate that things like this happen. It hurts us that are very dedicated to what we do.
I like the fact that my team is small, gets along well, and has the Mission in mind at the forefront of our goals.
I would want any one of my team mates and their K-9 partner looking for me or any one of my family members.
Our team has been through jealousy, politics and people who are in it for the "fun" their dog will have. But we have overcome those issues and grown to become stronger. I am proud of that and proud of the fact that we are a dedicated group.

This is one of the reasons why I think the ATTS Temperament Test is way better -- this is coming from someone who's dog passed both. They take breed and training into consideration... a SCHIII Mal does not act the same as an English Springer Spaniel, and I do not expect them to be judged as such. :P
And BTW, nursing homes, schools, etc. want to see a TDI certification, which is the CGC and then some. There are a couple of other therapy dog certification groups, but TDI is the biggest.
I agree that the ATTS is a much better test. Both can still be nothing more then trained for resposes but for the "average" dog the ATTS shows more true temperment.
