Wow! I can't remember anyone touching my dog without asking first, I can't imagine them continuing when asked to stop! Really, what's going through their heads?
People have probably asked to pet Roman... 3 times, maybe? And he's a 3 month old puppy.

He is so cute I'll bet that's why people want to pet him...I've found the same thing, but it lessens when they get older. Or maybe it's because I now walk two GSDs lol...they can be a little intimidating, I suppose.
Don't be afraid to say "no, he's in training"!

Funny its the ones that say "I know all about dogs" that usually are the ignorant ones when it comes to them. I just say politly no he's in training but thanks cause your coming up and talking to me is good for socialization, with a gsd that's usually enough people won't go right up, but friendlier looking dogs just draw people in. I would never go up to someones strange dog, your asking for trouble.

I have had constant and unending problems with people petting my dogs. I often take my dogs into public places to train stays sits downs, and comes. I do keep a shock collar on just in case, but don't really use it. Anywho I bought a vest for my pitbull, who is very much in shape. While he was in a down stay behind me and I was talking to the lady about bark collars, I turned around to find the manager of the petco petting my dog. I immiediatly yelled DONT TOUCH MY DOG. At this he jumped and everyone around looked at me like I was nuts. I just couldn't beleive that somebody would have the nerve to ignore the vest and pet a full grown male pitbull. It am extremly pissed with people by the end of about all of our public training sessions. The dogs make me happy, but I don't know what is wrong with people. I even had a lady try to hit my pit saying, "Oh I have 3 100 pound pits, I know how to handle them" Im barely able to control myself just thinking about it. I love pits but I would never touch or give commands to anybody elses dog.
Sorry for the rant, I guess the point is, if you are going to go in to public places with your dog, you have to be 100% ready and willing to tell everyone to @#!* off.

This very issue is something that I have been trying to figure out how to deal with ever since I got my puppy. Most of the people in my neighborhood at some point in time are coming through my house. My teenager knows half the teens, my girls know half the smaller kids and I know most the parents of those children. I had a hard time making up my mind how to deal with this issue as I didn't want Levi to have issues with all these kids but at the same time wanted the strong pack bond with his family. I finally decided that I would allow children to have access to him but no one else. This seemed to eliminate the fear I had of him ever being aggressive towards children especially once he is a PPD. Okay, that being said, last night I took my kids to an outside carnival that the YMCA put on for fall. There was a radio station blareing music, loud machines running jumping gyms all over the property and people by the score. I had no intention of taking Levi but something kept nagging me to do so and so I broke down put on the prong and took him along. It was a great introduction to the chaos of humanity. He did fantastic, btw. (except for the other dogs that were there) Anyhow, soooooo many kids came up asking me to pet my dog. I would first thank them for ASKING and not just coming up to pet him, then I would nicely explain to the parents that only the children were allowed to touch him as he was in training. Not one parent took offense. They were all very understanding. Then, get this, a pair of firemen that were there came up and one of the fireman asked if the dog was friendly, I then explained that I would appreciate it if he didn't pet my dog. You would not believe the look he gave me!! He treated me like I was the biggest :$(^& in town and walked away disgusted. Now, don't you think that a fireman, who probably works closely with policeman on a daily basis would understand the concept of a dog that is being trained and should not be touched? I was speechless! I came home and told my husband right away what happened and he was shocked also. You would expect out of all those people that the fireman would have been the most understanding of the bunch! I am learning more and more every day that if you don't want people to pet your dog you are going to have to deal with a lot of attitude and sometimes give the attitude. It's a strange thing to be sure. I wish it weren't so but I'm learning that I'm slowly having to turn into the "%*(# they are treating me like.

Every morning when i take Fred for his Morning walk i pass a Bus Stop with the Children waiting for the School Bus, there is about sixteen of them waiting about 12 to 14 years old, I stop and and put Fred in a Sit postition and i allow a few of them to give him a Treat, But i ask them not to pet him, They look forewards to seeing him every Morning, and it is good for him
I do not allow anyone to pet him at any time, even if they are friends, give him a treat but that is all
