Carol - we don't count eyeguards/browtines out here, blacktail are not supposed to have them, it is considered a non-typical trait. For what midwest/east consider 12 points we call a 5 point - we count the matched points, 5 on each side. If we get a buck with 7 on one side and 6 on the other it's a 7x6 instead of a 13 point (assuming it doesn't have eyeguards/browtines, if it did east it would be a 15 point)
Yuko- The last horse I had was a very very mistreated stud that I bought as a stud prospect to rehab. He kicked me, thats how I got the fracture, and I tore the muscles in my back while pumped full of adrenalin immediately following that - I forced him backwards into the small arena. I literally just held his halter under the chin with his head against my chest, and pushed that 1200 pound horse backwards nearly 20 feet. No whips no chains no equipment aside from my bare hands. I was at a boarding stable at that point and the closest place I could get him to was that little arena (he was in cross ties when it happened). I shut that gate and collapsed!
My fracture was not too terrible, a "bad hairline" or just a stable incomplete fracture, according to the ER doc. That was my right arm. I tore the latissimus dorsi, Rhomboideus major and minor, and the trapezius on my left side and pinched a nerve in my neck and strained my neck and the right side of my back. Being stubborn and not having insurance that was the last time I saw a doc for my injuries so I kept working and it took longer to heal.
It was my fault for being too insistent and impatient with his very last issue. He did not like his hind feet touched, and I had been working with him on it for a while, he'd been doing great, I got in a hurry - and paid the price! Was also the last problem I ever had with him, and eventually had him gelded and sold him to a nice show home with an experienced TWH trainer.
Working with problem horses helped me to be able to work with problem dogs. After a 1200 pound stallion that tries to kill people, even a 200 mastiff that wants to chew on my face is a piece of cake!
Ah. Off topic! Sorry all. I will be hunting next year Yuko so maybe I could send you some pieces for a doggie thanksgiving!

Holy crap that body is huge!!!
I always dehydrate the heart, liver, lungs and pancrease.
And use it for obedience training.
You women have all the luck. My wife shoots at bucks bigger then
I have ever seen when hunting.
Good job hope he tastes good.

That stuff would be pretty hard to save if he is in a camp or at a lodge.
The dogs do love it though.....

Carol, congrats on that buck! A nine pointer where I'm from. Looks like the dogs already had a go at the hind legs!
My Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman (I grew up in Maine) and he kept a bear pelt and head in our freezer one season. My Mom refused to open that freezer!

Thanks Lynne,
I have a bearskin rug, and the grandkids hate it but the dogs would chew it up if I let them.....
The hind legs on a Buck have scent bags in them, we trim them off before we gut or transport the deer since if you break them, they taint the meat, not to mention your clothes and skin....it is gross. That is why the legs are skinned. Plus, I don't want the dogs rolling in it.
I did save the tripe, heart, liver, kidneys and lungs though. The dogs are going to feed well and I still have a doe tag and will use that later in the winter when it is colder.
(and when I have room in the freezers for it, I have three freezers and they are just about full)

Congatulations on your buck Carol! Nice!
I pulled a deer head out of the freezer the other day and discovered that the frozen squirrel was giving it a big hug.
The base of the deer neck was damp when I stuck it in the freezer and the squirrel's belly stuck to it with his legs wraped around the neck.

I got a great visual on that one!
Was the deer a member of the Lonely 'Hart' Club?

 He must have been, but he was a bit frigid.
