Kristel, you might point this out to the people who think you are so mean for not using a Halti.
Dobermans are prone to Wobblers, which is usually caused by impaction of the vertebrae in the neck.
Look at how a Halti/Gentle Leader works. Think of what that does to the dog's neck.
Look at how a choke chain works, think what THAT does to a dog's neck.
Watch a dog walking with a prong collar. It does nothing to the dog's neck.
Just a thought.
In total agreement. I HAVE mentioned CVI (wobblers) when I've tried to discouraged halti or choke-chain use. There's a huge heredity factor with CVI but it can certainly be aggravated by the wrong kind of torque. It's MUCH more safe and humane to use a prong or e-collar.
I recently got Ed's DVD on E Collar training along with the Dogtra Collar and all I got to say is the results are...........
OUT EFFING STANDING
everything is faster, better and sharper, recall is great, outs are instant. You need to read up on Ecollars, if you don't object to using a prong collar then and Ecollars shouldn't be a problem

In fact, in several of his videos and articles Ed actually says, "I wouldn't train another dog without an eCollar" -- I think the key lies in using the eCollar rationally, correctly, and humanely. Anyone can crank a collar up to the highest stim level and break a perfectly good dog. They can do the same thing with a prong collar, but it costs less to do it with a prong. That's the only difference.

Well it's off topic from the OP's post, So I won't pursue, but if you'd like to PM me why you think it should be last resort I'd be very interested to hear your opinion. Certainly not looking for an argument, just genuinely intrigued to hear what you think.
