When Cleo was a pup, I fed her fresh, raw fish and she gobbled it up. I stopped for awhile, feeding the occasional canned sardines (no salt or oil).
Now she won't touch fresh whole fish (What a spoiled girl!). I recently took her on a vacation to San Juan Island Washington, where a neighbor brought over some fresh caught smelt. I excitedly gave one to Cleo, who reluctantly took it in her mouth only to spit it on the ground and walk away. No amount of coaxing or encouragement could get her to even sniff it.
Go figure

Wall Mart has Market pantry wild caught Alaskan Keta salmon fillets, is this one of the salmons not to feed raw?
Is tilapia ok to feed raw?
I don't know whether Alaskan Keta salmon is safe. Does anyone know if this Pacific salmon is actually from Alaska, or whether Alaska is just part of the name?
Tilapia: Tilapia is usually farmed, and I probably would not buy or feed farmed fish.

Leave it to me to have given my dog a small portion of it prior to learning this, dumoss. Well I hope the amount i gave her was fine I'm starting to get paranoid. I'll stay away from fish.
Is it necessary to freeze fresh raw chicken for any length of time before feeding it to my dog, or is it O.K. to feed right from the meat dept?
Thanks for the reply and info.

Keta is chum or pink salmon (All pacific salmon has several names. King = Chinook= blackmouth, Sockeye = Red, Coho = Silver, Keta = Chum = Pink = Humpies, Steelhead and cutthroat are not salmon but rather trout. Also unsafe.). It is NOT safe for dogs. As a note this is a GREAT year for pinks with record returns, you may see it very cheap in stores across the country marked as wild caught. Good for people, not so hot for dogs.
Smelt I find works best slightly frozen like a doggie version of an otter pop.
PS Keta is the newest marketing name for pink which are considered the low end of the pacific salmon scale of quality as its a fairly soft low taste fish. It doesn't mean it isn't worth eating. I love the stuff grilled, baked, smoked or cedar planked. It was just coined for this fish within the last 5 years by alaska marketing gurus, these are the same folks who brought you the overrated fish called Copper River Salmon which is just sockeye.

Here's all the salmon you need to identify as west of the Cascades.
And here is the WSU article on Salmon Poisoning
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientEd/salmon.aspx
Enjoy!
Oops, Chum is not the same as Pink. Chum are also called dog salmon. Either way, not safe if from the pacific. I've heard as well from fellow fishing folks with dumpster diving dogs that freezing does not prevent salmon poisoning.
For whoever mentioned chinook/kings being in the great lakes. They are an introduced species from the 1960s, I have no idea if their parasites went with them. You'll need to check with a local vet school for that info.

No. Have you read up on raw feeding (a good choice, BTW )?

I have purchased the 2 books recommended, "Raw Dog Food" and "Natural Nutrition for Dogs & Cats". I am awaiting there arrival and looking forward to reading them.
Are there other books recommended for a beginner interested in feeding raw?

Those are the two I'd suggest for getting you going! There are many with very good theory and research here http://leerburg.com/feedingdogs.htm , but to get you started, you probably can't beat the two you chose for now.

I bought those two as well when I first started feeding raw and I must say, they were great starter books! They're short, to the point, and easy reads. They also illustrate well how feeding raw can vary slightly from person to person, depending on individual preferences. Now if I have a question I can reference those books and the LB sample diet for comparison. After reading both books and consulting with the experienced people here on the boards, I was very comfortable with the idea of feeding my pup a species appropriate diet.

I tried feeding raw chicken wings for the first time today, I have not found backs or necks yet. I first put the whole wing in the bowl and she licked it but no luck eating it. I then held it for her to nibble on and she did just that. I then cut some of the meat off the bone and also cut it into smaller pieces. She likes the raw meat off the bone and had a few bone pieces but is unsure about the bigger pieces.
I'm excited she was interested in it, much more interested than the kibble lately. I will for sure keep at it and I hope she will soon chow down on the hole wing. I read about cutting into smaller pieces and also smashing the bones with a mallet. I was hoping to get some opinions on what more experienced raw feeders might do. Is it OK to just give her the meat off the bone or would smashed, ground or chopped small be best?
Thanks for all the help.
