Sandy if you were a dog you wouldn't look happy either if dragged from one show to another in the back of a van and handled, in most instances, by someone you hardly knew, all because of a lust for glory and or breedings by someone you trusted to do right by you. Norman

It's not always like that Norman. My dog is V-1, AKC Ch. has a best of breed and I did it all for fun. No lust for glory anymore then trying to title him in Schutzhund now. I would never send my dog off with anyone, but showing and the training you do for it can be just another fun thing to do with your dog.

Watching the GSD show, there were 2 or 3 that didn't have the exaggerated slope of the back and when not stacked, seemed to have a very gently sloping back, almost straight, with the appropriate slope on the croup. There were a few beauties out there and I'd like to be fair to those. In fact, this was one of the better shows I've seen of the GSD in a while.
Some as usual, seemed like they just didn't know what to do with their hindlegs, like the hindlegs weren't following correctly and it was messing up the coordination of their front legs (which were splaying as they trotted), and consequently messing up the trot, ruining the trot is more like it. It almost seemed on a couple that the hind paws hit the front paws a couple of times on the trot. Now that's sad.
Some seemed to be overweight, but that's nothing new in conformation shows.
If I HAD to choose between an American showline and a German showline that had the roach back, I'd choose the American. From what I can see, not all German showlines have the roach back and not all American showlines have the extreme sloped back.
Those who favor the working line GSDs, like myself, have a hard time seeing what has been done to this beloved breed. But when I see a beautiful GSD, no matter what line, I say so. And there were a couple there that were beautiful.

lol Sandy. Just saw the video and know exactly which dog you're talking about. I bet he'd rather be hunting.
Regarding showline GSD's in AKC conformation events, I agree with you guys.
I have to respectfully disagree with Norman, though. Most of the dogs competing in this specific dog show have been to a lot of dog shows before. I'm sure their handler is always the same person. And most of these dogs enjoy the whole dog show experience. I don't blame them. They get free massages, run a bit on a treadmill, free kibble and they get to sleep on queen side beds. Some of these owners treat their dogs better than they treat their own children. These owners spend a lot of money on their best friends.
Price money for the Westminster Champion = $0.00

I have to agree with Steve - I show my dogs in conformation for the hell of it. They are not "dragged" to shows or around the rings or anything like that as well. Casting people who show in conformation with such a wide brush is like saying that all dogs trained in schutzhund bite only because they fear being shocked by an e-collar ;-)
There are people who do sports because they enjoy spending time with their dogs and than there are people who do it for the glory - these people can be found in any sport.
I am off to Denver on Thursday for the big dog show cluster this weekend where most of the pros come after Westminster. My male needs only two single points to finish (has 3 majors). He is not miserable at the shows ;-) Oh yeah and health and temperament wise he is just fine too - OFA Good, Normal elbows, Bi-lateral hearing, Clear of PRA, Pennhip'd 90%, herding titled, obedience titled, and hoping for our SchH I by this time next year.
Speaking of health and show dogs - an intersting tidbit is that Uno is co-owned by Eddie Dziuk who is one of the head honchos at OFA.

Thanks Steve! We will need it :-p The competition is always tough at this show due to the size of the entry.

When Susan Tuck showed a video of GSD, I had to stop watching it. Because I can't stand to see GSD with extremely cow-hocked, it looks like their feet are on the opposite and the hocks of the back legs turn inward toward each other. It was pretty nasty to see.

I actually just watched the GSDs again. Everyone of them was flat footed and on their hocks. Most of them paddled in the front. I see nothing beautiful about them at all, in fact they look to be crippled - that is what you could tell by moving in that little tiny ring. If this was a local show that would be one thing, but this is Westminster and supposedly the best of the best. What a shame and what a joke.
