Boy I'm glad someone thought to ban Pugs.
They are soooo dangerous, and stern looking.
Someone *finally* sees that.
They left a few Terriers off the list.
Ah heck, just ban ALL the dogs. That will make PETA happy, then they can concentrate on the rest of our pets.

Just dress your sea kittens up as something else with the clever use of shells.
Clams, mussels .... unlimited disguise possibilities.

Been there, done that hundred times over with breed bans on my homeowner insurance, never mind the business insurance/liability, oh what fun, and expensive, that has been!
Most insurance companies will drop you if you have a dog that is mixed with any of the those breeds listed in the ban. A friend almost lost her business license because of her English Mastiff, they sent an insurance investigator to her house after she appealed, when this person left her house she was attacked in the driveway...by her bengal cat!

Are there any successful cases of overthrowing the BSL? Wish they had a ban on stupidity. What are police using where GSDs and Mals are banned? Poodles?

I'm just thinking out loud here but perhaps rather than crying about how life is unfair the dog community could realize that there is no right to own a dog. Then why, WHY are these breeds targeted by insurance companies and BSL? The answer from what I can tell from both are crappy owners who are causing problems for everyone.
After all if there wasn't a higher risk why would the insurance companies care what kind of dog you had? I know it's unpopular to back insurance companies but they're just out to make a buck like anyone else. Again, since there is no right to own a dog the insurance companies are allowed to make the decision to insure you based upon the kinds and numbers of dogs you have.
So in my eyes I guess we have a couple options to deal with this:
Cry about how life is unfair
Get dog ownership to be a right (be prepared to deal with the kinds of owners this will empower)
Deal with the crappy dog owner problem which is causing issues for everyone.

IMO the higher risk to insurance companies is associated not with the breed but with the particular type of owner. Certain breeds in the hands of such an owner are more likely to inflict serious damage but any breed would be treated about the same => would have the same behavioral issues. Banning such owners would be called "profiling", I think, and there would be a huge outrage. Much easier to blame the dogs.

To develop this idea further, why not require that every dog past certain age pass a CGC test? Every several years to make sure the training does not stop after the initial exam? There must be some reason why this is not implemented, I am sure somebody thought of this before.
Melissa, if we ban everything that is not explicitly permitted the world would be a very sad place, don't you think?

Banning such owners would be called "profiling", I think, and there would be a huge outrage. Much easier to blame the dogs.
Again, an insurance company exists to make money within the confines of the law. If by banning a dog breed they wrap up part of another problem with it why would we begrudge a business that?
If people really REALLY wanted to solve the BSL problem they would address the breeders who pump out hoards of puppies "just for fun" or profit, the BYB, people using dogs for illegal purposes, and the people who are not handling/containing their dogs safely.
So if you want to keep BSL away how about hosting a dog bite prevention class for an elementary school, asking for a dog training class at the local community college, host free dog training clinics at local parks, and encourage low cost spay neuter programs for bybs? At the same time encourage breeders to supply new owner education, screen new homes, and insist puppies come back to them if they cannot be kept.
Then finally when someone is lazy/ignorant resulting in a child's mauling, uses dogs for illegal purposes, leaves piles of poop in public places, or is pumping out puppies with ill health, poor temperaments, and selling them to the first person with the cash for them you should be angry... with those people. Those are the people screwing things up for everyone.
