THAT'S the way to do it. Either sell a book like the Schultze one or sell an actual raw diet..... or both!
It scares me how many people jump into raw diets with zero knowledge. As simple as it is, the one mistake they typically make is THE crucial mistake: Feeding all muscle meat and no bones.

People who feed raw do need to tell their vets about it, I totally agree with that. It is a shame that they feel they have to feed in secret for fear of getting the "dreaded talk" from their vets.
Yes, and the time to do it is at a well-dog checkup when the vet is exclaiming over the teeth and coat.... not when there's a problem that a vet can by by some amazing stretch of the imagination blame on the fresh diet.
The best I have right now is a vet who does *not* advocate raw, but who does not try to scare me out of it and who does mention "I cannot argue with the results you get."

One of the vets I use sells a raw diet right in the office, so I would say that's 'advocating'
Dr. Levy
Blaine, MN
That's fantastic! Wish I was that lucky. What raw diet does he sell, just out of curiosity. As the patties and premade diets are becoming more and more popular, I'm wondering which one a pro-raw vet prefers. Or does he make his own to sell?
I haven't been in the office in a while, Dr. Levy is also a homeopath in addition to practicing traditional medicine but last time I was there she sold Nature's Variety.

Ooops. Should have considered that your vet might have been a woman! Apologies!

I do not mention it. I know he is against it. I respect him in so many areas. He has two horses in training with my husband. Last year he talked me OUT of not vaccinating, just titering. This year I will not be swayed. (I am not good at conflict).
No more vaccinations or kibble for my crew.

You can DO IT.....
It's easy, just think of the benefits and stick to your guns. The worst he can do is....well....nothing if he wants to keep your business when you actually need it.

My vet here wanted me to feed Dr Hills. I don't bother debating it. I feed Orijen because raw ingredients are near impossible to come by, but I simply don't discuss it.
My vet in Orlando is down the road from the store that sells the prepackaged raw diets, in an area where people can afford to feed it. When I fed natures variety I mentioned it to the receptionist and she was positive about it. Not sure about the actual vets perspective on it, but given the neighborhood his practice is in, I can only assume that he is OK with it. The subject never came up. I got the obligatory Eukanuba Puppy Pack when I first started going there, but thats all that was ever said about it.

I think that if those of us that feed raw sit down and talk to our vets about raw and maybe ask them to have an open mind and read some of the literature that we have available to us, maybe some of them would be more comfortable with it.
Maybe make a consultation appt. so that there is no "rush" to get to another patient.
I gave my vet the article that Cindy wrote, along with the menu plans. He could not disagree with it.
They probably will not promote it, but they may be more comfortable knowing that we are feeding a "balanced" diet and not just throwing chicken in the yard...
And I totally agree with Connie, pick the best time to approach telling your vet what you feed.....when they are saying that the dog is healthy and looks great is the best time.

Does anyone here use distilled water or boil their water for their dogs? It never accured to me until I read Sue's post. There are so many contaminates in our water. I use a water filter, but is that enough? WOuld be interested to hear from people who boil their water for their dogs. How important is it?
Should I be doing that?
God bless
