Has any body here had the experience of moving to another DMV practice and when the erst while vet was asked for the dogs records was only given copies? Not the original files. No xrays, no folder of any sort, just a bunch of stapled papers that obviously don't reflect the size of the original notes?
I can't help feeling like there's some editing and redaction going on before I pick up what is suppost to be mine. I paid for them after all. I paid for the xrays, I paid for the diagnosis, I paid for the meds, I paid for all the paper work and the maintaince of said paper work. Why can't I go in and claim it? Why do I have to settle for copies two days later? And no xrays.
It stinks. It looks and feels like all the medicial professions, they all cover for their own, and if they can't trust the next doctor....... They bury it and lie through omission.

Hi Randy,
I understand the frustration but that's how it works. Vets have to keep the originals for a period of years depending on the State they're in. That includes x-rays because they are part of the medical record.. They must give you a copy if you ask for it and they must send a copy to your new vet if they ask for it. X-rays can be sent to the new vet to be looked at but they have to be returned to the doctor that took them.

MEDICAL RECORDS
Veterinary medical records are an integral part of veterinary care. The records must comply with the standards established by state and federal law.
Medical Records are the property of the practice and the practice owner. The original records must be retained by the practice for the period required by statute.
Ethically, the information within veterinary medical records is considered privileged and confidential. It must not be released except by court order or consent of the owner of the patient.
Veterinarians are obligated to provide copies or summaries of medical records when requested by the client. Veterinarians should secure a written release to document that request.
There shouldn't be any editing, redacting, erasing, or crossing out of words in the file. I'm pretty sure that's illegal.
I've made it a habit to have a copy made following each vet visit, before I leave the building. It takes very little time to copy a page or 2 and I don't need to wait on anyone if I want to change vets.
